How far will four friends go for immortality? This novel is Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author “Robert Silverberg at his very best” (George R. R. Martin). After Eli, a scholarly college student, finds and translates an ancient manuscript called The Book of Skulls, he and his friends embark on a cross-country trip to Arizona in search of a legendary monastery where they hope to find the secret of immortality. On the journey with Eli, there’s Timothy, an upper-class WASP with a trust fund and a solid sense of entitlement; Ned, a cynical poet and alienated gay man; and Oliver, a Kansas farm boy who escaped his rural origins and now wants to escape death. If they can find the House of Skulls where immortal monks allegedly reside, they’ll undergo a rigorous initiation. But do those eight grinning skulls mean the joke will be on them? For a sacrifice will be required. Two must die so that two may live forever . . . Stretching the boundary between science fiction and horror, Robert Silverberg masterfully probes deeper existential questions of morality, brotherhood, and self-determined destiny in what Harlan Ellison refers to as “one of my favorite nightmare novels.” This ebook features an illustrated biography of Robert Silverberg including rare images from the author’s personal collection.

'Skull Style' presents not only one of the most ancient symbols used in the history of mankind but how it is utilized in the most surprising and modern way today. Formerly an emblem of evil and mortality, the skull has been transformed into an avant-garde design element used in the most cutting-edge art, chic interiors and vanguard style of the moment. Whether embellished on costly T-shirts, woven on limited edition chairs, and even encrusted with diamonds sold at an art auction for $100 million, the skull is no longer just a daunting memento of our frail mortality but a contemporary figure of fashion. This book shows how this once morbid trinket of death has been reinvented into the much-desired decoration by the trendsetters of tomorrow.

Beautifully designed and produced is Nancy Glenn-Nieto's 1st overall collection of Skull Art. Her iconic images of Mexican and Mesoamerican myth, occultism, beliefs in death, the afterworld, and reincarnation resonate strongly in the Surrealism tradition colored with a tinge of Henri Matisse's painterly qualities of Fauvism in combination with the realistic values of impressionism added to that a pinch of Pablo Picasso's distinct proboscises. Strong color use applied with precision draftsmanship to Nancy's wild imaginative paintings create an illusionary world of dark subjects that on the one hand hold mysterious meanings, but on the other are whimsical observations. However, the collection is more than a group of paintings on canvass; instead they are the story of how Nancy arrived to paint Skull Art. Born into a family of two cultures; her paternal grandfather's people came to Virginia a few years after the Mayflower landed at Plymouth. They were pioneer tobacco farmers who gradually migrated to Mississippi; where they founded towns, built schools, and preached the Bible in church. In contrast, her maternal grandmother's family from Northern Chihuahua, Mexico, had strong political influences with President Porfirio Diaz and his politicos. When the insurgent Pancho Villa and his followers blew up an army barrack and the train station at Juarez, Mexico, the family fled the violence to the safety of El Paso, Texas. Along the way, there were some violent deaths that influenced the family for generations. But it was not until Nancy had a close call with her own death did she experience a paradigm shift that set her upon a journey into Skull Art.
