Excerpt from Exercises and Illustrations on the Black-Board: Furnishing an Easy and Expeditious Method of Giving Instruction; Designed for the Use of Common Schools The various uses of tbe black-board arc, perhaps, too well understood and appreciated in this vicinity, to need any illustration or recommendation whatever. In many of our scbool-houscs, wc have black-boards of ample dimensions, and generally teachers who arc competent to explain their uses. But this is not the case everywhere, nor generally throughout New England. Even in Massachusetts, there are many school-houses destitute of this necessary appendage; and there arc others, in which, though there may be a black-board, yet it is so extremely small, as to be of no use; and there are still others, in which there is a black-board, but no teacher competent to explain its uses. Some think, that its use is restricted almost entirely to mathematical subjects. But this is a great mistake, as will appear from a perusal of the following pages. For the purposes of common school instruction, the black-board is worth more than all the diagrams and other apparatus that ever were invented; for it can be made to supply the place of these. A piece of chalk or a crayon, in the magic haud of a skilful teacher, can instantly be made to represent any diagram which is needed for the purposes of illustration; and, in an instant, the drawing can be made to disappear, and another to take its place. And these illustrations are visible to all the pupils at once. As illustrative of this point, take the following account, given by the Hon. Horace Mann, of the manner in which geography is taught in the Frussian schools: - *' The teacher," says he, " stood by the black-board with the chalk in his hand. After casting his eye over the class, to see that all were ready, ho struck at the middle of the board. With a rapidity of hand which my eye could hardly follow, he made a scries of those short, divergent lines, or shadings, employed by map-engravcrs to represent a chain of mountains. He bad scarcely turned an angle, or shot off a spur, when the scholars began to cry out - Carpathian mountains, Hungary; Black Forest mountains, Wirtemberg; Giant's mountains (Ricsen-Gebirge), Silesia; Metallic mountains (Erz-Gcbirge); Pine mountains (Fichtel-Gebirge); Central mountains, (Mittcl-Gebirgc), Bohemia, &o, &c." Large amount of practical work is presented for the scholar in his first efforts upon the slate. A peculiarity in this part of the system consists in adding by combination by which mental labor is much dimin ished, while increased expedition and accuracy are seemed. This is a matter of practical importance, both in the school room, and the business operations of every-day life. A second peculiarity will be found in the application of, the principle of Subtraction. After the introductory men tal and slate exercises, a business application of the ciple is introduced by natural and obvious gradations. The first consists in subtracting a single member from the amount of several numbers the second, in subtracting the amount of several numbers from a single member and the third, in subtracting the sum of several numbers from the amount of several others. These three distinct subdivisions, embrace every possible application of the principle of subtraction, and for each, specific directions, illustrations, and explana tions are given; The same general system is carried out in the applica tion of the other simple rules.
