Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject American Studies - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,3, University of Würzburg (Neuphilologisches Institut), course: Spezialgebiet Amerikanische Literatur 2, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses Quentin Tarantino's 2013 movie "Django Unchained" under the aspect of black and white masculinity. It looks at stereotypical ideas of masculinity of white slave holders ans black slaves and how they are represented in the movie. Also the main characters are discussed as to their differences in masculinity and how they express it. "Django Unchained", a movie directed by Quentin Tarantino, was released in December 2012 and won several prices. The film was discussed a lot in public mostly because of the issue of slavery the director is dealing with in the movie and about how he does it. The film had to endure many critical reviews, bad ones and good ones obviously, as many people thought of the depiction of violence as fitting considered the brutality towards slaves in the antebellum south, others thought it to be extremely exaggerated. Also the controversial use of the N-word, as named in literature and interviews, was a major part of the public discussion about '"Django Unchained". Ultimately it is the viewer himself who has to decide if in his opinion Tarantino uses the right words and pictures to get even with the institution of slavery and the relationship between white farmers and black slaves.

A descendant's research uncovers intentionally-hidden, painful stories that built resilience, courage, compassion, and an abiding faith in God in her once enslaved family who lived and traveled dusty roads of rural towns in deep southern states. Discovering legacies these ancestors unknowingly passed down through generations made writing this historical narrative a must. The story provides a broader picture of the Felder family that arrived in 1735 from Switzerland and made their homes in South Carolina before heading west and South to Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. It brings the slaves' lives and perspectives into view, looks at multiple sides of the Civil War as it played out in communities lived in by the Felders and their neighbors, and provides background and context for Reconstruction and Jim Crowism in these communities. OURstory Unchained and Liberated from HIStory suggests that h-i-s-t-o-r-y is incomplete and, in fact, inaccurate, if it is not inclusive. In the family of her forebearers, Dr. Felder locates relatives who were slaves, fighters in the Civil War for both the Union and Confederate armies, educators, ministers, homeowners . . . and slave holders. Revealing unlikely and unsuspecting interactions with movers and shakers of history like Booker T. Washington, Jefferson Davis, President Taft, Julius Rosenwald, Ida B. Wells and Medgar Evers, OURstory reflects everyone's story. It postulates that an honest telling of h-i-s-t-o-r-y renders the past relevant to all of our lives, and it encourages African Americans, in particular, to begin the important search for the buried stories in their families. OURstory captures the relevance of knowing our history. The legacies of families must be researched, must be written, and must be told.

Human slaves can never defy their alien masters - or can they? Rose Rico never believed the rumors that the government was secretly selling human beings to the Alphas in exchange for advanced alien technology. The idea that human sex slaves were a luxury item throughout the galaxy was just too ridiculous to take seriously - until Rose found herself, along with hundreds of other human captives, bound for the far reaches of space, and compelled to cater to the depraved desires of her new alien masters. As a rule, pleasure slaves don't live very long, especially the stubborn ones. But Rose refuses to give up. She bands together with aliens and humans alike, as they are snarled into tighter knots trying to escape the will of the masters. Someday, somehow, they will win back their freedom - or die trying! The beginning of a provocative space opera of slavery and rebellion. Slave Trade is Book 1 in the Slave Trade trilogy including Slave Masters and Slaves Unchained.www.susanwright.info
