Sleep Memory And Synaptic Plasticity written by Sushil K. Jha and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-25 with Medical categories.

Over the years there has been growing interest among the scientific community in investigating sleep and how it affects the memory and other brain functions. It is now well established that sleep helps in memory consolidation and induction of neural plasticity, and that short-term deprivation of either total sleep or rapid eye movement sleep alone can induce memory deficits very quickly. Quantitative and qualitative changes in sleep architecture after different training tasks further suggest that discrete memory types may require specific sleep stage/s for optimal memory consolidation, and studies indicate that sleep deprivation alters synaptic plasticity and membrane excitability in the hippocampal neurons and synaptic up-scaling in the cortical neurons. Further, sleep alteration during pregnancy may increase the risk of depression and adversely affect maternal-child relationships, parenting practices, family functioning, and children's development and general wellbeing. This book coherently discusses all these aspects, with a particular focus on the possible role of sleep in memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. It also highlights the detrimental effects of sleep loss on mental health, the immune system and cognition. This book is a valuable reference resource for students and researchers working in the area of sleep, memory, or neuronal plasticity.

Sleep is a very active state. Sleep is important to a number of brain functions and important to maintain the functioning of neurons including how nerve cells communicate with each other. In fact, the brain and body stay remarkably active during sleep. Sleep disturbances and sleep deprivation are considered as a necessity and in some quarters considered to be fashionable for night time activities. Sleep loss and sleep disturbances in modern society are due to changes in a variety of environmental and social conditions for example less dependence on daylight for most activities, extended shift work and 24/7 round-the-clock activities. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders have great impact on both memory function and non-memory function of cognitive processes.

This issue dives into the study of sleep function, particularly as it relates to memory and cognition. Any clinician who sees patients with sleep disorders, or in particular any sleep medicine specialist, will find this information enlightening and invaluable, as it discusses the current state of understanding of how sleep affects humans’ waking cognitive functions. These review articles describe the research that has taken place, and the lessons that can be taken away from them, so that clinicians can confidently advise their patients on the functional importance of adequate sleep, and recognize cognitive symptoms of inadequate sleep. Articles discuss such topics as animal and human research on sleep and memory, various imaging techniques to describe brain activity during sleep, and the role of dreams.

Sleep Of Memory written by Patrick Modiano and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-16 with Fiction categories.

The newest best-seller by Patrick Modiano is a beautiful tapestry that brings together memory, esoteric encounters, and fragmented sensations Patrick Modiano’s first book since his 2014 Nobel Prize revisits moments of the author’s past to produce a spare yet moving reflection on the destructive underside of love, the dreams and follies of youth, the vagaries of memory, and the melancholy of loss. Writing from the perspective of an older man, the narrator relives a key period in his life through his relationships with several enigmatic women—Geneviève, Martine, Madeleine, a certain Madame Huberson—in the process unearthing his troubled relationship with his parents, his unorthodox childhood, and the unsettled years of his youth that helped form the celebrated writer he would become. This is classic Modiano, utilizing his signature mix of autobiography and invention to create his most intriguing and intimate book yet.

Sleep And Dreaming written by Edward F. Pace-Schott and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-02-27 with Medical categories.

How and why does the sleeping brain generate dreams? Though the question is old, a paradigm shift is now occurring in the science of sleep and dreaming that is making room for new answers. From brainstem-based models of sleep cycle control, research is moving toward combined brainstem/forebrain models of sleep cognition itself. The book presents five papers by leading scientists at the center of the current firmament, and more than seventy-five commentaries on those papers by nearly all of the other leading authorities in the field. Topics include mechanisms of dreaming and REM sleep, memory consolidation in REM sleep, and an evolutionary hypothesis of the function of dreaming. The papers and commentaries, together with the authors' rejoinders, represent a huge leap forward in our understanding of the sleeping and dreaming brain. The book's multidisciplinary perspective will appeal to students and researchers in neuroscience, cognitive science, and psychology.
