A sleeper cell is a person who remains a dormant member of a group while belonging to another group for undisclosed reasons. Usually the sleeper cell status is kept a secret. A sleeper cell is a clandestine group of terrorists who work underground and come back to life suddenly to achieve the target set by their superiors. A sleeper agent is a spy who is placed in a target country or organization, not to undertake an immediate mission, but rather to act as a potential asset if activated. Sleeper agents are popular plot devices in fiction, in particular espionage fiction and science fiction. Sleeper agents who have been discovered have often been natives of the target country who moved elsewhere in early life and were co-opted (perhaps for ideological or ethnic reasons) before returning to the target country. This is valuable to the sponsor as the sleeper's language and other skills can be those of a 'native' and thus less likely to trigger suspicion. One of the most insidious tactics at a terrorist organization's disposal is the implementation of a sleeper cell. This consists of secret agents who receive specialized training in their home countries and are then assigned to assimilate into another country's culture and society. These agents may spend years performing their regular duties while living deep undercover, then suddenly receive orders from their overseas handlers to either commit an act of terrorism or provide aid to those who will.

His father . . . a Russian spy? It can't be. Alexei Lideika has a new identity-part of his witness protection-but now he's ready to tell his story. On the same day he fails the bar exam, he learns that his father is a sleeper spy for Russian operatives. Soon he becomes entangled in the FBI's plot to take down a dangerous man known as "The Rook." And Celia, the love of his life, has seemingly fallen for another man-one of the Russian operatives. Amid arson and kidnapping and torture, everyone and everything Alexei cares about is in danger. He must play an intricate game of deception between the Rook and the FBI. But how can he save his family and, at the same time, study to pass the bar? Is the reckless, charismatic lawyer Marcus Emory the answer to his troubles . . . or is he, like everyone else in Alexei's life, more than he seems? E. J. Law has written the first of a series that is not your typical legal thriller. While Son of a Sleeper spy is interwoven with action, intrigue, and suspense, it also teaches principles of law to provide the proper foundation for a student to pass the bar exam. The legal principles are in italics and footnotes so as not to hinder enjoyment of the story for the lay reader.

Russians Among Us written by Gordon Corera and has been published by HarperCollins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-18 with Political Science categories.

With intrigue that rivals the best le Carré novels, Russians Among Us tells the explosive story of Russia’s espionage efforts against the United States and the West—from the end of the Cold War to the present and the significant threat of hacking the 2020 election Spies have long been a source of great fascination in the world of fiction, but sometimes the best spy stories happen in real life. Russians Among Us tells the full story of Putin’s escalating espionage campaign in the West, the Russian ‘deep cover’ spies who penetrated the US and the years-long FBI hunt to capture them. This book also details the recruitment, running, and escape of one of the most important spies of modern times, a man who worked inside the heart of Russian intelligence. In this thrilling account Corera tracks not only the history, but the astonishing evolution of Russian espionage, including the use of ‘cyber illegals’ who continue to manipulate us today and pose a significant threat to the 2020 election. Like a scene from the TV drama The Americans, in the summer of 2010 a group of Russian deep cover sleeper agents were arrested. It was the culmination of a decade-long investigation, and ten people, including Anna Chapman, were swapped for four people held in Russia. At the time it was seen simply as a throwback to the Cold War. But that would prove to be a costly mistake. It was a sign that the Russian threat had never gone away and more importantly, it was shifting into a much more disruptive new phase. Today, the danger is clearer than ever following the poisoning in the UK of one of the spies who was swapped, Sergei Skripal, and the growing evidence of Russian interference in American life. Russians Among Us describes for the first time the story of deep cover spies in America and the FBI agents who tracked them. In intimate and riveting detail, it reveals new information about today’s spies—as well as those trying to catch them and those trying to kill them.

This book examines the figure of the sleeper agent as part of post-9/11 political, journalistic and fictional discourse. There is a tendency to discuss the terroristic threat after 9/11 as either a faraway enemy to be hunted down by military force or, on the other hand, as a ubiquitous, intangible threat that required constant alertness at home. The missing link between these two is the sleeper agent – the foreign enemy hiding among US citizens. By analyzing popular television shows, several US comic books, and a broad variety of Hollywood films that depict sleeper agents direct or allegorically, this book explores how a shift in perspective—from terrorist to sleeper agent—brings new insights into our understanding of post-9/11 representations of terrorism. The book’s interdisciplinary focus between media studies, cultural studies, and American studies, suggests that it will find an audience in a variety of fields, including historical research, narratology, popular culture, as well as media and terrorism studies.
