Large-scale clear-cut logging in the boreal forest may contribute to the loss of insect biodiversity through reductions in the amount of older, undisturbed forest and through stand-level decreases in structural heterogeneity. To investigate the long-term effects of clear-cutting on insect communities, hymenopteran and dipteran communities were surveyed with Malaise traps during the summer of 1998 in 12 mature (30-50 year old) post-logged and 12 unlogged boreal mixedwood stands in northeastern Ontario. Unlogged stands yielded a significantly higher abundance of Dolichopodidae (long-legged Ries), several Syrphidae (hoverflies) species, and the Syrphidae larval wood-inhabiting guild. These differences were predominantly due to the older ages of the unlogged stands which supported different habitat features, though some evidence of a logging effect per se was found. These results demonstrate the need for maintaining features characteristic of older forests in post-logged stands, and suggest a potential loss of insect species characteristic of older forests, particularly species dependent on downed woody debris, in the face of continued clear-cut logging activities.

Marie, Ont. : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993 with Nature categories.

Description of the small mammal communities inhabiting old pine forests and the other forest types common in Schembri, Way-White, and Wlasy Townships in the Territorial District of Algoma, about 100 km east of the City of Sault Ste. Marie. The study identified whether old pine forests represented unique habitats for small mammals, and predicted the impact of timber harvest on small mammal communities. Small mammals were collected using Victor mouse traps in cut and uncut stands of old growth white pine, hard maple, boreal mixedwood, and black spruce.

Part I outlines the rationale and history of ecological land classification (ELC) in New Brunswick, and presents basic scientific concepts and facts that help the reader to interpret the information that follows. Part II, Portrait of New Brunswick Ecoregions and Ecodistricts presents a detailed look at the variety and distribution of ecosystems across the geographic expanse of New Brunswick. Each of the seven chapters of Part II provides a high level description of the ecoregion, followed by detailed descriptions of each ecodistrict within the ecoregion.--Includes text from document.
