Location Aware: Mobile Applications as an Interpretive Tool Lauren M. Messenger The goal of this research was to describe the ways that the specific technologies available to smartphones, such as location awareness, afford new opportunities and strategies for interpretation of exhibit content and audience engagement. On-site analysis guided by principles of interpretation and design, and interviews with museum app developers, suggest that museum apps are considered effective as interpretive tools when the smartphone technology is used in a way that serves the content being presented. All of the institutions surveyed were interested in creating mobile apps that focused on augmenting the experience that visitors might have through traditional interpretation or exhibit content, rather than imitating it. A survey of professionals indicates that a more complete understanding of the audience of museums apps is still required within the field for there to be certainty about their effectiveness and impact as interpretive tools.

The purpose of this study was to better understand smartphone mobile guides and their use in US history museums. This study sought to answer three core questions. First, what features are shared by smartphone mobile guides in history museums? Second, what do history museum staff think are the factors associated with successful guides? Third, in what ways does the use of smartphone mobile guides in history museums impact exhibit development practices? Smartphone mobile guides were defined as phone-based applications that guided users on scripted tours. This study was significant for two reasons. First, previous studies of smartphone guides were not conducted in history museums. Second, the rapidly advancing capabilities of smartphones rendered many of those studies obsolete. Data collection was done through semi-structured interviews of history museum professionals who worked with smartphone guides as well as document analysis of the guides themselves. Zoom was used to conduct and record the interviews. The interview transcripts and mobile guides were analyzed using emergent coding. There were four significant results for history museums to understand when considering the use of smartphone mobile guides. First, smartphone mobile guides were defined by high usage rates and a focus on enhancing the visitor experience. Second, common features of smartphone mobile guides were: they were free of charge, allowed data to be gathered on users, designed for individual use, classified as heads-up experiences, included some form of navigation aid, and included an alternative tour. Third, smartphone mobile guides did not impact the development of exhibits. Fourth, history museum smartphone mobile guides were not viewed as a source of revenue. When combined these findings suggested that there was a baseline set of expectations successful mobile guides in US history museums followed. There were three limitations to this study. First, the sample size was small. Second, many of the mobile guides had inaccessible location-based features. Third, the sample was biased towards guides whose existence was acknowledged online through third party websites.

Entrepreneurship Innovation And Inequality written by Vanessa Ratten and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-08-30 with Business & Economics categories.

This book hopes to stimulate discussion about how entrepreneurship and innovation contribute to growing inequalities in territories. This will help bridge the gap between research and practice on the role of territory dynamics and regional development. The book begins by examining the growing inequality in regions, which has resulted in lagging economic development. The need to shift current economic policy towards spatial inequality through harnessing the innovative capabilities of regions is examined. The book puts forth a case for reversing the inequality that is evident in lagging regions as a way to reinvigorate territories. The book should appeal to researchers, policy makers, business leaders and the general public interested in territorial dynamics and development.

The Hammerum Burial Site is the story of a burial site told by more than 20 academics; a fascinating combination of different archaeological and scientific studies analyzing individuals, objects and context from different angles. The site was named after the small modern-day town of Hammerum, 5 km east of Herning in the central part of Jutland, Denmark. As early as 1993 the museum investigated this burial site, where seven inhumation graves emerged within a small area, most of which turned out to be empty of finds. Three of the graves did turn out, however, to contain well preserved organic material, so they were removed as block samples in large wooden crates with a view to later excavation. Thanks to a grant in 2009 from the Danish Cultural Agency's special pool for the conservation of objects of unique national importance (the ENB pool) a collaboration between the museum, the Danish National Research Foundation Centre for Textile Research and the Conservation Centre in Vejle began. These analyses show that grave 83 - known as the Hammerum girls grave - was a sensation. All that remain of the deceased was her hair and her dress, but it was the best-preserved Danish Iron Age textile from an inhumation grave. Therefore, it offers an unique opportunity to analyse an object which in most cases has disappeared. The analysis tells us an extraordinarily nuanced archaeological story of daily life and of pan-European 'slow fashion': a dress used in everyday life, produced by carefully choosing fine fibres which, together with the coiffure refers to a style recognizable throughout Europe and worn by a mobile, well-groomed, well-connected Iron Age female. Moreover, the preserved organic material permits us a rare glimpse of the grief of the bereaved. We can see how they carefully wrapped the Hammerum Girl in skin and put blueberry twigs under her head before laying her to rest - an act of compassion and mourning.

Natural History Dioramas written by Sue Dale Tunnicliffe and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-12-05 with Science categories.

This book brings together in a unique perspective aspects of natural history dioramas, their history, construction and rationale, interpretation and educational importance, from a number of different countries, from the west coast of the USA, across Europe to China. It describes the journey of dioramas from their inception through development to visions of their future. A complementary journey is that of visitors and their individual sense making and construction of their understanding from their own starting points, often interacting with others (e.g. teachers, peers, parents) as well as media (e.g. labels). Dioramas have been, hitherto, a rather neglected area of museum exhibits but a renaissance is beginning for them and their educational importance in contributing to people’s understanding of the natural world. This volume showcases how dioramas can reach a wide audience and increase access to biological knowledge.
