Social Distance is a play that follows the paths of four people: Hannah, Paolo, Ya and Amare. All four are friends and colleagues at a Pacific Northwest technology company and are forced into self-quarantine during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. This play examines all the waves the four, and indeed the world, face during this period of global pandemic: Fear, strength, resolve, financial strain, emotional and physical fatigue, faith and community, all through the lens of social distance. As the waves of national, state and local measures intensify to combat COVID-19, the four try to stay healthy and stay connected, growing a deeper bond in the face of isolation and potential significant illness. The play concludes with a world that truly has changed for generations: The real-world costs, and finality, in many respects, caused COVID-19.

The human brain, still in 2024 the great beyond of biological engineering, operates with a complexity that has long inspired technological advancements. In the ethos of Web4, comprising the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Quantum Computing, and self-healing hardware, we observe remarkable parallels to the brain’s functionality. This section explores these similarities, positing that insights from neuroscience can inform and enhance the development of Web4 technologies. Through a detailed comparison, we illustrate how the brain’s mechanisms of decision-making, self-repair, and resilience can be mirrored in these cutting-edge emerging technologies.

This book critically examines the COVID-19 pandemic and its legal and biological governance using a multidisciplinary approach. The perspectives reflected in this volume investigate the imbrications between technosphere and biosphere at social, economic, and political levels. The biolegal dimensions of our evolving understanding of “home” are analysed as the common thread linking the problem of zoonotic diseases and planetary health with that of geopolitics, biosecurity, bioeconomics and biophilosophies of the plant-animal-human interface. In doing so, the contributions collectively highlight the complexities, challenges, and opportunities for humanity, opening new perspectives on how to inhabit our shared planet. This volume will broadly appeal to scholars and students in anthropology, cultural and media studies, history, philosophy, political science and public health, sociology and science and technology studies.

The Design Of Protest written by Tali Hatuka and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-02 with Architecture categories.

Public protests are a vital tool for asserting grievances and creating temporary, yet tangible, communities as the world becomes more democratic and urban in the twenty-first century. While the political and social aspects of protest have been extensively studied, little attention has been paid to the physical spaces in which protests happen. Yet place is a crucial aspect of protests, influencing the dynamics and engagement patterns among participants. In The Design of Protest, Tali Hatuka offers the first extensive discussion of the act of protest as a design: that is, a planned event in a space whose physical geometry and symbolic meaning are used and appropriated by its organizers, who aim to challenge socio-spatial distance between political institutions and the people they should serve. Presenting case studies from around the world, including Tiananmen Square in Beijing; the National Mall in Washington, DC; Rabin Square in Tel Aviv; and the Plaza de Mayo in Buenos Aires, Hatuka identifies three major dimensions of public protests: the process of planning the protest in a particular place; the choice of spatial choreography of the event, including the value and meaning of specific tactics; and the challenges of performing contemporary protests in public space in a fragmented, complex, and conflicted world. Numerous photographs, detailed diagrams, and plans complement the case studies, which draw upon interviews with city officials, urban planners, and protesters themselves.

Everyday Ethics And Social Change written by Anna Lisa Peterson and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Philosophy categories.

Americans increasingly cite moral values as a factor in how they vote, but when we define morality simply in terms of a voter's position on gay marriage and abortion, we lose sight of the ethical decisions that guide our everyday lives. In our encounters with friends, family members, nature, and nonhuman creatures, we practice a nonutilitarian morality that makes sacrifice a rational and reasonable choice. Recognizing these everyday ethics, Anna L. Peterson argues, helps us move past the seemingly irreconcilable conflicts of culture and refocus on issues that affect real social change. Peterson begins by divining a "second language" for personal and political values, a vocabulary derived from the loving and mutually beneficial relationships of daily life. Even if our interactions with others are fleeting and fragmentary, they provide a viable alternative to the contractual and atomistic attitudes of mainstream culture. Everyday ethics point toward a more just, humane, and sustainable society, and to acknowledge moments of grace in our daily encounters is to realize a different way of relating to people and nonhuman nature--an alternative ethic to cynicism and rank consumerism. In redefining the parameters of morality, Peterson enables us to make fundamental problems such as the distribution of wealth, the use of public land and natural resources, labor and employment policy, and the character of political institutions the preferred focus of debate and action.
