Gender equality progress in Australia, as in many other liberal nations, has stalled in the face of a backlash. This report explores this further with a national survey of community attitudes to gender equality and empowerment. 2,122 people, aged from 16 onwards, were surveyed regarding whether gender policy should be a priority, whether inequality and sexism are still problems, whether workplace equality policies discriminate against men, career opportunities, political correctness, the exclusion of men, and who should be responsible for addressing sexism. The report highlights the major trends identified, and considers differences by gender, age generation, and time spent online either gaming or in social media. The report concludes with some preliminary thoughts on the key policy questions and further research. Sections include: Is inequality between women and men still a problem in Australia today?; The rhetoric-reality gap: unpacking Australian attitudes on gender equality; How do Australians understand sexism?; In which areas of Australian society is sexism most prevalent?; Have men been forgotten in the struggle for gender equality?; Are male moderates misogynists or critical thinkers?; Male millennial traditionalists and the gaming culture; and Regional Australia leads the way on positive attitudes to gender equality. Worrying, despite high levels of knowledge about the nature of gender inequality, a growing number of Millennial and Gen X men appear to be alienated from the process of change and are backsliding into traditional value systems.
