"Alberto Hurtado, S.J. (1901-52), was a monumental figure in the Americas in the last century, yet to date he has not been extensively studied and publications about him are especially lacking in English. Because he combined both serious academic work with hugely influential pastoral work, he is more accessible than more purely academic figures (Ellacuria, Sobrino, Segundo, Boff). While deeply rooted in the predominant theological currents of his time-which included strands of conservatism, anti-modernism, and concern about socialism and unbridled capitalism-Hurtado also articulated forward-looking, progressive views on social rights, reform, the needs of the working class, and education policy. Providing a thorough overview of this hugely important figure in Chilean history, both within and beyond the Catholic church, this book of collected essays examines Hurtado's life and writings from a variety of perspectives. Thus, it offers a rich understanding of who he was, how his thought took shape and evolved, and why he is still relevant in the early 21st century. This is the first book in English which examines Hurtado and his thought. "Social Justice and the Sacred" will be of interest to several different audiences. Scholars and students of Latin American history will appreciate the way it grounds Hurtado and his influence in that region's historical development. Researchers and students in theology and spiritualty, as well as church leaders, will find it of value for its examination of how Hurtado fits into the arc that leads from the conservatism of the 19th century to the strong social concern (and even liberation theology) of the 20th century. The book-or at least chapters from it-lend themselves to being used in undergraduate and graduate courses on theology, Latin American Studies, and history"--

Provoking God written by Richard J. Tilley and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-20 with categories.

Provoking God is argued from an intersectional feminist perspective. The book assesses and analyzes the framework for how we can move into a space where we can prod God to act in terms of social justice and communal action. This is achieved though close reading of the Hebrew Bible such as the stories of Hagar and Hannah. Additionally, scholarship across disciplines is referenced to pinpoint how a more synthesized rhythm of understanding God can lead us to reconciling historical God-reference with future and goal oriented God-reference that is holistic and in parity with biblical and societal law. The intended reader is both the casual reader interested in social justice as well as the biblical scholar interested in how these issues coalesce historically, critically, and towards praxis of unity. I have kept the language and subject accessible, yet diligent towards an academic focus. The work combs through scholarship to invites discussions on institutionalized patriarchy and God's place and contribution towards that reality and reifies an arch towards a celebrated place where we can find presence of mind and social peace. There are nine chapters in addition to an introduction, which is close to a chapter in length.

Traditional Catholic Reflections is a collection of timely essays by the editor of the popular Catholic E-Zine: TCRNews.com. In this collection Stephen Hand takes a critical look at the prevailing trends and movements in theology and culture today, from Neo-Modernism to Secularism to Integrism. Whether the subject is liturgy, the culture of life vs. a culture of death, or social justice, Hand shows how it is the Church’s proclamation alone that can heal our deepest wounds and rescue us from the hopelessness that imbues so much of the thought of our time.
