The number of projects is increasing worldwide as traditional and repetitive tasks are carried out through automation. Projects being temporary and unique while being adopted globally across sectors presents a challenge for the effective management of environmental, economic, and social parameters. Projects are people centric and require the effective management of internal and external stakeholders. In the modern age, social media is seen as a tool that connects people across the world having significant implications on everyone’s daily life. Social media is used for different purposes and encompasses multiple affordances as these are often free and also bring together people from different walks of life who tend to use them differently. However, the role of social media in managing projects is still under explored. In this edited book, multiple authors working on the application of social media in projects come together to craft an agenda for the future. First, the use of social media for internal stakeholders, such as managers and engineers, are discussed. Following this, the use of social media for external stakeholders, such as communities and project affected persons are discussed. Finally, the guidelines for education using social media and research using social media is discussed. Thus, the book brings together multiple authors to discuss how social media can be used in project settings to facilitate interactions and strategic conversations across hierarchical levels and geographic boundaries for diverse goals. The book is a valuable resource for all project management academics, researchers and practitioners who are interested in learning about the application of social media in project settings.

The Social Project Manager describes a non-traditional way of organising projects, managing project performance and progress. The aim being to deliver, at the enterprise level, a common goal for the business; one that harnesses the performance advantages of a collaborative community. Social elements help mitigate the constraints associated with the control aspect of project management, which is essential for governance. Team collaboration, problem solving and engagement in projects will never come from technology alone but require careful management. Peter Taylor draws on research from projects and the worlds of social media and communication to paint a vivid and practical guide to the why and how of social project management. There is no simple template for you to follow; instead he provides an explanation of the benefits, the tools and the constraints so that readers can navigate through to an approach that is sensitive to the culture of their organization and the nature of the projects that they run. Alongside the author’s ideas, the text features advice and case examples from many of the leading technology providers. The Social Project Manager is a very-readable and down-to-earth guide from one of the most highly-regarded practitioners and commentators on the world of project management.

Project management is a practice-based profession that demands not only a good grasp of project management concepts but also practical experience. Therefore, apart from knowing the theories, it is also important to know how to apply the knowledge and skills appropriately in a specific situation in order to achieve the best results as a project manager. This paper discusses how social media tools have become very powerful resources for good information. It reviews the methods of teaching to analyze the amenability of new media and redefine the mode of imparting training. Next, it examines the role of generation gaps and shows how different age groups use social media for their personal activities. It explores the information available on Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and Slideshare. It also discusses how gaming is a very powerful tool, which can be used in packaging the field experience gained by seasoned project managers, specifically citing PM Game®. Different scenarios can be offered as challenges to the promising project managers who can live through these situations in a pseudo-real environment. The author also discusses how to design courses in a blended workflow learning model by using social media and Learning 2.0 concepts. It concludes by identifying the benefits of using social media.

The application of new technologies is rapidly increasing, not only in private but also in professional spheres, including project management. However, the use of social media (SM) may be both beneficial and dangerous. Therefore, the goal of the article is to investigate in which areas it is possible to use social media in project management and what the opportunities and threats surrounding it are. In order to reach the goal of the article and obtain answers to the research questions, the methods of diagnostic survey and questionnaire technique were used. The research was carried out on a sample of 108 respondents involved in the project's implementation. To complement the obtained data, additional qualitative research using unstructured interviews was conducted. The presented research indicates that managers who work in an Agile or Hybrid way are more likely to use SM than managers who work in a traditional way. A significant dependency between the use of SM and the way the project team works was confirmed, but no age differences were found. Moreover, the results of the study show that social media usually supports project managers and team members in such areas as communication, cooperation, engagement, knowledge management, work productivity, promotion of the project and employee development. Threats concerning the use of social media in project management are noted in relation to the security of the project and loss of sensitive project data. Analysis of the study and interviews resulted in a broad set of principles of SM usage within projects. Future research could provide further confirmation of these findings by using larger samples.
