Excerpt from Socialism for Students This little work consists of a series of articles reprinted from the columns of "The International Socialist Review," and written in answer to the request of its editor for a study course in Socialism. The aim of the author is to indicate in briefest outline some of the more salient points in the Socialist philosophy, so as to give the reader an inkling into the nature of the modern Socialist movement. At best this treatise can serve only as a framework. The much more important task of rearing the structure remains for the student. It is hoped that the course of reading, suggested in the appendix, will be found of service in this respect. So far as possible the author has followed the beaten path of Socialist thought and purposely tried to avoid phases of the question over which there is serious dispute. Where anything new is offered, of course he alone is responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Road Ahead: A Primer of Capitalism and Socialism A Brilliant American editor has recently written that a period of great change in this country "is not only indicated; it is certain." We in America will soon find ourselves "in one of the great periods of reorganization and pioneering." Other countries have already entered that era. The old generations of Americans have given little attention to social pioneering. They have sought to build up the nation's power to produce and have let it go at that. On the question of distribution they have adopted a policy of drift. Many of these problems will be left for solution to the generation of boys and girls, young men and women, now in the schools and colleges of the country. This generation should begin now to prepare themselves for the great task ahead. This little primer is a modest attempt to help them to make a start in that preparation. It was written chiefly for boys and girls from the seventh to the tenth grades, the higher grades in grammar schools and the lower grades in high schools. It is hoped, however, that interest will not be confined to these groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject st0p short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. Excerpt from How I Became a Socialist: And Other Papers The pamphlets included in this volume were published at various times during the last four years, 1908-1912, while conducting Socialist propaganda in England and the United States. They were never intended as a connected whole. Some of them were delivered on special occasions, as for instance the "Bible Argument for Socialism," to the Methodist preachers of San Francisco. "How I Became a Socialist" was first printed, red hot, off my tongue, in a little paper published for campaign purposes in England. Before the last copies are exhausted, I have had three hundred sets bound for those who wish to preserve them. A new type of propaganda material will appear as the social revolution proceeds. This has had its place, and such of it as may yet prove useful may be reprinted. I count myself happy to have spoken or written anything, to have had any part however small, in this great hour of human trial and triumph. Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Excerpt from A History of British Socialism The book which is now published under the title A History of British Socialism, Volume was intended by the author to be the first of two volumes, the second of which would carry the story of British Socialism into the opening decade of the present century. The War intervened before the second volume was ready for the Press, and Mr. Beer, like most other students, was compelled for the time being to lay his literary work on one side. The first volume, therefore, is now published separately; the next, it is hoped, will appear on the return of peace. Together they will form the most complete account of the development of Socialist thought in Great Britain which has yet appeared. The subject of the present volume is the growth of Socialism down to the rise of Chartism, and its readers must remember that there is a sequel in which the story is completed. But the period with which it deals is sufficiently distinct to be studied separately, and the book is a unity, not a mutilated fragment. Excerpt from The New Socialism This little book, written with the purpose of presenting in a popular and readable form, ideas which have been treated more seriously elsewhere, is almost wholly descriptive of a form of social and industrial organization which the writer conceives to be in harmony with the principle of social justice elsewhere enunciated. The problem of practical socialism is as old as civilization. In all centuries men have dreamed of a golden age in which all things would be made perfect, and have struggled to devise laws and systems under which men might cooperate in harmony, and all have sufficient for their needs. Yet, at the present day, the problem appears to be as little understood as in the beginning. From the time of Moses and Plato to that of the more modern Utopian imaginings which hold our interest for a passing day and are soon forgotten, philosophers have left but futile records of their speculations. Hence men have come to think of the problem as one which does not come within the sphere of exact science. He who claims to have reached a solution of the problem must necessarily face an incredulous audience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Socialism and Character Here on this holy Tuscan mountain sanctified by the Passion of St. Francis, where brown-robed brothers move about in an exceeding peace among their peasant-friends and white sheep-flocks, the rumor of the modern struggle sounds from very far away. Yet since the first pages of this book were written, the phenomenon it signals, as you and I are aware, has become more and more evident. Socialism is now making itself felt in every Anglo-Saxon country, not merely as an academic theory, but as a political force. Associations enlisting the joint support of high finance and high ideals are formed against it; local victories, in the United States, increase with each election. Shall this socialism remain purely political? Or shall its rich moral possibilities be fostered and utilized? Shall it be allowed to develop mainly as a negative movement of revolt from an intolerable situation, or should men rather stress in it the constructive elements related less to the attainment of material decencies than to the upbuilding of character? These are the questions we have wanted to help people to think out, - having first in much perplexity thought them out for ourselves.
