Our reply to it was necessarily short and disappointing, both to the engineer and to us. Some of the things that might have been said are given here for the sake of the cause and for the information of those who, sooner or later, are likely to ask similar questions. To our great regret the reasonable information requested by this engineer cannot be furnished either by the Seismological Society or by any other organization, or by any individual, for the simple reason that it does not exist.
