This book offers a new concept of inclusion of the marginalised in India — the Broad-basing Process. The author examines how through this process increasing numbers of marginalised social groups can enter into the social, political and economic mainstream and progressively derive the same advantages from society as the groups already part of it. The book critically reviews how the broad-basing process has worked in the past in India both before and after its independence. It examines how social groups like Dalits, OBCs, Muslims, women and the labour class have fared, and how far economic development, urbanisation, infrastructure development and the digital revolution have helped the marginalised and promoted broad-basing. It also offers mechanisms to speed up broad-basing in poorer economies. A first of its kind, this volume will be useful for scholars and researchers of political studies, sociology, exclusion studies, political economy and also for general readers.

Middle India And Urban Rural Development written by Barbara Harriss-White and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-28 with Social Science categories.

Middle India and Rural-Urban Development explores the socio-economic conditions of an ‘India’ that falls between the cracks of macro-economic analysis, sectoral research and micro-level ethnography. Its focus, the ‘middle India’ of small towns, is relatively unknown in scholarly terms for good reason: it requires sustained and difficult field research. But it is where most Indians either live or constantly visit in order to buy and sell, arrange marriages and plot politics. Anyone who wants to understand India therefore needs to understand non-metropolitan, provincial, small-town India and its economic life. This book meets this need. From 1973 to the present, Barbara Harriss-White has watched India’s development through the lens of an ordinary town in northern Tamil Nadu, Arni. This book provides a pluralist, multi-disciplinary and inter-disciplinary perspective on Arni and its rural hinterland. It grounds general economic processes in the social specificities of a given place and region. In the process, continuity is juxtaposed with abrupt change. A strong feature of the book is its analysis of how government policies that fail to take into account the realities of small town life in India have unintended and often perverse consequences. In this unique book, Harriss-White brings together ten essays written by herself and her research team on Arni and its surrounding rural areas. They track the changing nature of local business and the workforce; their urban-rural relations, their regulation through civil society organizations and social practices, their relations to the state and to India’s accelerating and dynamic growth. That most people live outside the metropolises holds for many other developing countries and makes this book, and the ideas and methods that frame it, highly relevant to a global development audience.

This handbook examines 25 years of decentralised governance and development in India. It also discusses the status of service delivery and identifies the issues and challenges involved in achieving development at the local level. The volume studies themes such as the devolution of powers in India, administrative and fiscal decentralisation, decentralised planning, Panchayats in scheduled areas, the sociological aspects of decentralisation, caste, gender and local democracy, capacity building, ICT for local governance, urban local governance, workfare and decentralisation, and decentralised natural resource management. It also looks at Panchayati Raj institutions from a Gandhian perspective. The first of its kind, this handbook will be an essential read for scholars and researchers of decentralisation and development, development studies, fiscal decentralisation, political studies, political sociology, Indian politics, Indian government, public policy and governance, political economy, South Asian studies, and South Asian politics.

This book is a compilation of M?navadharma- ?atakam and Praj?prabhutva-?atakam composed by Prof Nadkarni. While there have been many books on humanism and democracy in other languages, these ?atakams with original verses in Sanskrit attempt to start a new genre in Sanskrit literature. Inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s exemplary ideas, the first ?atakam revolves around the topic of ‘Humanitarianism’. Humanitarianism is considered as the religion of being human, which involves the welfare of human race and of nature, and it’s not just about being philanthropic, but being kind and considerate to all human beings and living up to the ideal of being humane. M?nava-dharma accepts the moral responsibility of all human beings as well as the basic rights of all, irrespective of gender, colour, religion, race, or nationality, and hierarchy of any kind. The scope of Humanitarianism is extended beyond the mere concept of human rights and posits that being aware of one’s duties is integral to being human. Further, in this book, the notion of Democracy is presented as an institutional framework in which Humanitarianism can be best practised. Praj?prabhutva-?atakam brings out the implications of democracy and our responsibilities therein. It emphasizes the relation between freedom and our responsibility as citizens to remain attentive towards the affairs of state and institutions. Prof Nadkarni presents a series of arguments to establish how democracy reconciles equality with freedom. The two ?atakams provide a strong philosophical base for understanding politics, for citizens of democracy, especially meant for young students.
