This study identifies and discusses sociodemographic structures, processes and trends that entail risks for individuals, households and communities in the small island developing States of the Caribbean, on the basis of the analysis of the environmental, geographical, economic and institutional vulnerability of these States conducted by ECLAC in the document Equity, development and citizenship, which was presented at the twenty-eighth session of the Commission. The analysis focuses on three sociodemographic issues. First, fertility, which continues to occur early and at high rates among poor groups of the population and entails pronounced gender inequalities, especially for female heads of household who are required to undertake the responsibility of bringing up children. Second, population ageing, which is fairly advanced in a number of the Caribbean islands and calls for carefully planned measures. Third, migration ?in particular of the international type? which reaches very high levels in some of the region's countries. Migration offers opportunities for individuals and households, but it also drains part of the skilled labour force from the countries of the Caribbean and exposes migrants, in particular the least skilled, to discriminatory and unfair treatment. The document concludes with policy guidelines for addressing these issues, which together comprise the sociodemographic vulnerability of the Caribbean.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound and multidimensional impact on the population. Latin America and the Caribbean, characterized by high levels of inequality, labour informality and vulnerability, is one of the regions hardest hit by the health, economic and social impacts of the pandemic. This document analyses the effects of the pandemic on population dynamics and on the sociodemographic processes outlined in the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development, such as ageing, gender equality and women's autonomy, the exercise of sexual and reproductive rights, territorial inequalities and mobility. It also assesses how the pandemic has affected the different population groups identified as targets of the priority measures of the Consensus owing to the exclusion, discrimination and vulnerability they have historically experienced, and the fulfilment of the rights of which they are holders. This document was prepared pursuant to the request of the Presiding Officers of the Regional Conference on Population and Development of Latin America and the Caribbean, with a view to systematizing and analysing the sociodemographic impacts of the pandemic in the region, and includes policy recommendations for a sustainable recovery with equality in the framework of the Montevideo Consensus on Population and Development.

Featuring 17 chapters, the book covers five key areas, namely Overview and Introduction; Gender, Crime, and Violence; Gender and Intimate Partner Violence; Health, Management, and Public Policy; and Migration and Tourism. Throughout the course of the book, the chapters explore how different kinds of qualitative research can be used to inform public policy and help deal with a myriad of socioeconomic problems that affect Caribbean people. The book will be beneficial for students and scholars both from the Caribbean and internationally who are engaged in the conduct of qualitative empirical enquiry. It will further hold appeal to advanced undergraduate level classes and postgraduate students along with scholars in the fields of social sciences and education.
