En Poder y performance, Alexander reúne un conjunto de trabajos fundamentales para entender este nuevo enfoque de su sociología cultural. En los primeros plantea los fundamentos de su teoría de la pragmática cultural, definiendo los elementos de la performance social y analizando cómo las dificultades para mantenerlos unidos afectan a la producción de sentido, así como el papel que desempeña en ello el poder.
