Entre 1982 y 2001, Pierre Bourdieu dictó clases en el Collège de France. En un esfuerzo impresionante de síntesis reflexiva y divulgación, dedicó los primeros cinco años de enseñanza a una introducción general a la sociología, algo muy infrecuente en esa institución. Convencido de que lo propio del oficio científico es el arte de reconocer problemas teóricos en los hechos más banales de la vida cotidiana, en cada encuentro Bourdieu destina la primera hora a la exposición y discusión conceptual, y convierte la segunda en un seminario abierto en el que el tema y el tono cambian por completo para mostrar –con ejemplos y situaciones concretas o hipotéticas, con humor y complicidad con los participantes– cómo se puede construir un objeto, elaborar un método y poner a prueba esas formulaciones teóricas. El presente volumen, que corresponde al ciclo lectivo 1983-1984, está centrado en el concepto de capital y en sus vínculos con las nociones de campo y habitus. Clase a clase, Bourdieu desarrolla las diferentes formas de capital (el económico, el simbólico) para poner el foco en los diferentes estados del capital cultural según su nivel de estabilidad y codificación, que varían según se trate de sociedades precapitalistas o de sociedades altamente diferenciadas. Partiendo de estas precisiones –y con una formidable revisión de clásicos de las humanidades–, se adentra en el campo cultural para explicar cómo funcionan los golpes de autoridad y los circuitos de legitimación o desacreditación simbólica. Atento a los cruces entre el mundo intelectual y el periodístico, observa cuáles son las estrategias para determinar quién existe como pensador o escritor (y qué cosa es un buen escritor), quién merece ser leído y comentado, mientras pone en evidencia los criterios arbitrarios y prefijados de los balances habituales en la prensa cultural ("las mejores novelas del año", "las nuevas voces"). Como no hay una clasificación objetiva respecto de qué es bueno o no, quién existe o no, y esa ausencia es un hecho social, sobrevienen la angustia y el temor a ser excluido del reconocimiento. En ese sentido, con reveladores análisis de El proceso de Kafka y otras obras literarias en las que ve un modelo dramatizado de la sociedad, Bourdieu señala que los universos intelectuales, donde circula y da rentas el capital simbólico, son un espacio hipercompetitivo, lleno de incertidumbre: allí, los ingresantes hacen sus apuestas vitales al tiempo que sienten amenazada su identidad y su existencia misma. Mirando con lupa ese universo, sin dar nada por sentado, este esperado libro se revela ineludible para comprender la vida social y los sobresaltos que conlleva. Con la experiencia del investigador y la generosidad del docente, en diálogo con otras disciplinas como la antropología y el psicoanálisis, Bourdieu demuestra acabadamente que las ciencias sociales están llenas de experimentación.

Este libro comprende la primera parte del curso de sociología general que Pierre Bourdieu dictó en el Collège de France: una serie de clases en las que expone qué es para él la sociología, cuál es su objeto y qué significa ser un sociólogo. Hay que volver, dice Bourdieu, a los conceptos fundamentales, no meramente para hacer divulgación sino para transmitir en qué consiste el trabajo del investigador y hasta qué punto se empobrece o se automatiza si se lo da por sentado. Para eso, hay que desafiar el sentido común que nos dice que el sociólogo estudia las estructuras y los procesos susceptibles de un análisis estadístico independiente de los individuos, o bien que sólo se ocupa de los sujetos concretos y las interacciones observables entre ellos. Lejos de esas simplificaciones, la sociología no es una foto o una película de la realidad. Al contrario, busca describir las cosas invisibles, las relaciones que no se dejan fotografiar, las estructuras ocultas, incorporadas al punto de presentarse como naturales. En un estilo coloquial y amable, valiéndose de referencias empíricas y de comentarios irónicos, y siempre atento a su auditorio, Bourdieu revisa la noción de la sociología como ciencia de las instituciones y –tomando los casos de la Iglesia y el Estado, el sistema escolar y el mundo del arte– analiza las operaciones de nominación y clasificación, los ritos que legitiman lugares y posiciones para determinados agentes sociales (excluyendo a otros). Y se concentra luego en la articulación entre habitus y campo, en las luchas simbólicas, en el conocimiento teórico y el práctico, en las relaciones entre las distintas especies de campo y de capital. De Durkheim a Marx y Weber, de Flaubert a Sartre, de Lévi-Strauss a Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger y Leibniz, Bourdieu piensa el oficio del sociólogo en diálogo con los padres fundadores de la filosofía, la antropología y la historia contemporáneas.

Society, to Pareto, was governed principally by non-rational forces, and he was critical of all rational explanations and ideologies. He contributed to the development of functionalist and systems theories of social and economic life and was a major influence on the work of talcott Parsons. He was also and advocate of empirical and experimental methods in the social sciences as well as of mathematical sociology and economics.Pareto's classic work, the Trattato di Sociologia Generale (1916), was published by his student Giulio Farina in 1920. Farina was able to rely upon Pareto for corrections and approval of the abridgement. Now, for the first time, this abridged work is available in an English translation, as the Compendium of General Sociology. Elisabeth Abbott participated in the Livingston-Bongiorno translation of the complete Trattato in the 1930s, and she has drawn upon that notable translation (now out of print) in her work on the Compendium. A substantial introduction by sociologist Joseoh Lopreato of the University of Texas provides a historical context for Pareto's work and calls attention to the main lines in his thought.
