Le projet d'une sociologie de l'esprit consiste à étudier les objets abstraits ou semi-abstraits que sont les actes, les sentiments, les relations et les qualités sociales : compliment, reproche, humiliation, jalousie, gratitude, subordination, alliance, bonté, cruauté, sans les réduire à autre chose qu'eux-mêmes, c'est-à-dire les pensées de leurs sujets. Cette démarche se présente comme une alternative possible aux théories culturelles comme aux théories biologiques de l'esprit. Elle propose en effet une interprétation sociologique du cognitivisme contemporain qui tente de mettre en évidence l'autonomie des faits de signification par rapport aux déterminations historiques et naturelles. Dans la perspective d'une sociologie de l'esprit, les pensées et la liberté seraient l'émergence, non pas de mécanisme biologique et évolutionnaires, mais de structures conceptuelles inhérentes au langage et aux règles logiques des sociétés humaines. Ce qui ne les empêcherait pas d'exercer une certaine sorte de pouvoir causal sur les personnes et sur le monde.

Issu d'une réflexion sur le travail d'interprétation sociologique mis en œuvre sur des données de nature différente (données d'observation, entretiens, documents écrits, données quantitatives), ce livre aborde des questions centrales dans l'apprentissage de l'esprit sociologique : la description, l'interprétation et la surinterprétation, l'usage sociologique des analogies, les rapports entre objectivation sociologique et critique sociale, entre l'ordre de la pratique et l'ordre du discours, entre sociologie et littérature, etc. Et s'il fallait absolument l'affilier à un genre particulier, un tel ouvrage entrerait sans doute, de par sa tonalité critique et sa volonté d'expliciter sans détour ce qu'est la connaissance sociologique mais aussi ce qu'elle n'est pas, dans la catégorie des anti-manuels.

Logodaedalus, a prehistory of genius, explores the various ways this language of ingenuity was defined, used, and manipulated between 1470 and 1750.
