Meet Sociology Matters: the third sibling in our Schaefer/Smith Sociology and Schaefer/Haaland Sociology: A Brief Introduction family of texts. This volume in the Schaefer introductory sociology series is perhaps the most unique. Though a slim, core-concepts volume, Sociology Matters does not sacrifice depth and breadth of coverage for its length. Rather, with streamlined use of features and visuals, it covers much of the same content as Sociology: A Brief Introduction in fewer pages, making it an attractive-and affordable-option for both university and college professors who enjoy the freedom of using readers and other ancillary material alongside their text. While delivering the fundamentals in sociological theory, research, and vocabulary, the First Canadian Edition of Sociology Matters also exercises readers' sociological imaginations, taking them on a journey towards the discovery of their own sociological perspectives and an understanding of why sociology matters in the real world.

Like its predecessors, the seventh edition of this text reflects Rick Schaefer's mission to bring readers a comprehensive, up-to-date presentation that teaches them how to think critically about society and their own lives from a wide range of classical and contemporary perspectives. Combining balanced coverage of theory with current research findings, distinctive social policy sections, examples of interest to students, and abundant learning aids and exercises, this text will help students develop a sociological imagination. An optional package combines Schaefer, Sociology, Seventh Edition and Reel Society Interactive Movie 2.0 CD-ROM at nominal extra cost. The introductory sociology class provides the ideal laboratory in which to study our own society and those of our global neighbors. The distinctive emphasis on social policy found in this text shows students how to use the sociological imagination in examining such public policy issues as sexual harassment, the AIDS crisis, welfare reform, the death penalty, and the offshoring of service jobs. Three basic premises guide this highly successful introductory text - first that theory and research must be both comprehensive and clear, second that the text must show how sociology is relevant both to the study of society and to students' lives and third that sociology can play a valuable role in teaching critical thinking skills. To that end, this solid, well respected text combines a balanced three-perspective approach with excellent student oriented examples, and distinctive social policy sections in a concise presentation that offers an alternative to full length books.

Psychiatry And The Legacies Of Eugenics written by Frank W. Stahnisch and has been published by Athabasca University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-28 with History categories.

From 1928 to 1972, the Alberta Sexual Sterilization Act, Canada’s lengthiest eugenic policy, shaped social discourses and medical practice in the province. Sterilization programs—particularly involuntary sterilization programs—were responding both nationally and internationally to social anxieties produced by the perceived connection between mental degeneration and heredity. Psychiatry and the Legacies of Eugenics illustrates how the emerging field of psychiatry and its concerns about inheritable conditions was heavily influenced by eugenic thought and contributed to the longevity of sterilization practices in Western Canada. Using institutional case studies, biographical accounts, and media developments from Western Canada and Europe, contributors trace the impact of eugenics on nursing practices, politics, and social attitudes, while investigating the ways in which eugenics discourses persisted unexpectedly and remained mostly unexamined in psychiatric practice. This volume further extends historical analysis into considerations of contemporary policy and human rights issues through a discussion of disability studies as well as compensation claims for victims of sterilization. In impressive detail, contributors shed new light on the medical and political influences of eugenics on psychiatry at a key moment in the field’s development. With contributions by Ashley Barlow, W. Mikkel Dack, Diana Mansell, Guel A. Russell, Celeste Tuong Vy Sharpe, Henderikus J. Stam, Douglas Wahlsten, Paul J. Weindling, Robert A. Wilson, Gregor Wolbring, and Marc Workman.
