Challenging the ‘classical’ conception of Goffman’s sociology, this book offers a new interpretation based on a comprehensive examination of previous interpretations and critical assessments of Goffman’s work. Epistemologically, the book acknowledges the important but overlooked influences of both pluralism and particularly of pragmatism, where not only Simmel but also James and Dewey played a pivotal role in his work, thus rooting Goffman’s thought in symbolic interactionism. In this major revision of his earlier Sociology Revisited, Murray Knuttila examines the trends and theories in the discipline of sociology. Although each of these perspectives--structural functionalist, Marxist and neo-Marxist, symbolic interactionist--offers insights into understanding the human condition and society, none can provide satisfactory answers to all the questions that sociologists pose. Knuttila proposes an alternative approach--adapted from the work of British sociologist Anthony Giddens and infused with the philosophy of the American sociologist C.W. Mills-- that begins by examining the structure or organization of biological reproduction and material production within a society. As he notes, "most of the important new directions in sociological thinking and analysis during the past two decades have been stimulated and influenced by feminism", and recnet feminist studies on work and the family are of great significance to sociology today. This book explores the thought of Pierre Bourdieu, one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century, proposing a modification and extension of his concept of habitus. Building on Bourdieu’s notion of the translational reproduction of social structure – the idea that while social classes move in the same direction, dominant groups are able to preserve their relative power position, thus maintaining the structure of the gap – the author proposes that as social structures change, habitus change correspondingly, and thus become plural. Informed by Norbert Elias’ process sociology, this volume offers examples of habitus pluralisation, arguing that this modification of Bourdieu’s thought renders it more suitable for the study of social changes and represents the development of a path that Bourdieu himself had begun to explore in the later stages of his career. As such it will appeal to scholars of sociology and social theory with interests in historical sociology, process sociology, social structures and the thought of Bourdieu.
