Children today are going through a lot—they are busy with school, involved in extracurricular activities, and trying to navigate the world of COVID and other concerns. Teachers and parents are busy too—with work, school, and parenting activities. How will they have the time to teach valuable skills such as manners and respect to children? These are “soft skills”; the skills necessary to work with others and be a respected and valuable citizen in the workplace of tomorrow. Soft Skills for Kids: In Schools, at Home, and Online, 2nd Edition, focuses on ways that teachers and parents can work together to teach soft skills to the children in their lives. This book is not a curriculum program or set of lessons to help children, but rather a series of “teachable moments” in which adults teach strategies to children as they happen. Finally, as the education of children has changed recently due to the pandemic with an increased number of children learning online, this book will be a great resource for how adults can work together to help children learn soft skills—in schools, at home, and online.

Is incessant technological use harming our children? Yes! The book Technologically Impaired Teens and the Soft Skills We Need to Teach Them to Succeed explores the negative effects teenage technological overuse has on student social interactions, communication skills, and concentration levels. In essence, technological overuse impedes the development of children's "soft skills," the essential social and emotional skills needed to navigate educational, professional, and personal lives successfully. Author LeeAnn Browett offers a method to counteract the negative effects of teenage technological overuse. The book serves as a teaching resource for elementary and secondary educators, particularly those teaching inquiry and social studies. Through increased collaborative group interactions, activities, and assessments, educators can teach students the essential soft skills needed to succeed in school, the workplace, and in life. The book identifies essential soft skills and provides a method for educators to teach and assess these skills. Elementary and secondary level collaborative group rubrics are included to assist teachers and students in identifying and assessing essential soft skills. Over 40 pages of ready-to-use, reproducible student resources, activities, and assessments are included to support student soft skill development. The sample student resources, activities, and assessments are aligned with Common Core State Standards and College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework Standards from the National Council for the Social Studies (2014). The book Technologically Impaired Teens and the Soft Skills We Need to Teach Them to Succeed is broken down into the following sections: 1. An overview of how technological overuse impedes children's skill development; 2. A summary of how impeded skill development manifests in the workplace and negatively impacts the ability to work collaboratively later in life; 3. An identification of the essential soft skills children and adults need; 4. An explanation of the Collaborative Group Rubric assessment tool; 5. Sample Collaborative Group Rubric teacher resources and student activities; 6. Sample grades six through twelve collaborative group activities and assessments to encourage soft skill development; and 7. An adapted Collaborative Group Rubric: Grades K-5 and sample elementary level collaborative group activities to encourage soft skill development and counter the detrimental effects of technological overuse in our younger students. While Technologically Impaired Teens and the Soft Skills We Need to Teach Them to Succeed is intended to be a resource for elementary and secondary educators, it is a useful parent resource as well. Parents and educators alike need to help children moderate their use of technology. Clear technological use boundaries must be set and modeled by parents and educators. Technologically Impaired Teens and the Soft Skills We Need to Teach Them to Succeed is not an anti-technology book. Browett acknowledges the benefits of technology in education and in life. Yet, Browett advocates for technological moderation and the need for educators and parents to counter the detrimental effects of technological overuse.

I was hired by a major university to teach recently released offenders how to become employed. I walked into my first class intending to follow the lead of all the other job training programs in the city, which was teaching the students to properly fill out applications, write resumes, facilitate mock interviews, and locate employment opportunities. After the first couple of classes, most of the students were either not paying attention or sleeping. I quickly realized my presentation needed to be interesting, challenging, beneficial, and actually guide the participants on how to remain employed. However, I was unable to find any published material for teaching new hires the soft skills necessary to keep a job. This workbook is a compilation of the soft skills class material I have developed over an eighteen year period. I have used this material with great success and have taught soft skills in schools, inner-city church programs, nonprofits, and government funded job training programs. It is a unique collection of essays, exercises, quotes, and maxims that will give students a realistic perspective on work-related expectations and the expectations of the supervisors who hire them. It will help students develop their problem solving skills, guide them in making appropriate decisions, and create a desire to plan out goals and achieve them. The workbook style is challenging and playful, serious and engaging and a stepping stone to developing the cognitive skills necessary to quash unproductive thinking and self-defeating emotional behaviors.

Young people are expected to learn academic or technical knowledge in a manufacturing economy, which can be referred to as hard skills (for example, to produce a car through assembly lines). In many countries today, countries have been shifting from a manufacturing economy to a service economy, which has resulted in young people expecting to gain skills that are non-technical and widely transferable to different settings. This skills are referred to as soft skills, which are basically related to the qualities of an individual. In this book, the authors include several chapters on soft skills development in adolescents with particular reference to Chinese culture. This book includes conclusions based on the data collected from the third year of the community-based P.A.T.H.S. Project in Hong Kong. It also discusses dreams, aspirations, hopes and related constructs in Chinese adolescents. Additionally, the authors also present chapters on the relationships between pornography consumption and positive youth development qualities; and the last few chapters document attempts to promote soft skills in university students. With the emergence and consolidation of a service or knowledge-based economy, the desired qualities in adolescents have changed. Obviously, soft skills development plays an important role in the employability of young people. It is also vital to the complete development of young people as individuals in the present and future.

In just a few years, today’s children and teens will forge careers that look nothing like those that were available to their parents or grandparents. While the U.S. economy becomes ever more information-driven, our system of education seems stuck on the idea that “content is king,” neglecting other skills that 21st century citizens sorely need. Becoming Brilliant offers solutions that parents can implement right now. Backed by the latest scientific evidence and illustrated with examples of what’s being done right in schools today, this book introduces the 6Cs—collaboration, communication, content, critical thinking, creative innovation, and confidence—along with ways parents can nurture their children’s development in each area.
