The two interconnected problems of educational quality and piracy are described and analyzed in this book, which begins with an investigation of the accusations regarding the alleged dismal quality of educational software. The reality behind accusations of rampant piracy and the effect of piracy on the quality of educational software is examined in the third chapter, which focuses on the copyright law and how it is currently being interpreted by copyright specialists. Chapter 4 presents legal principles useful in determining the potential legality of such practices as networking; concerns pertaining to software in school libraries; the differences between owning and leasing software; and the consequences of infringing the copyright law. Chapter 5 focuses on the means available to educators, software producers, and society to contain or control illegal copying and the use of illegally copied software in the schools. The final chapter discusses software quality, piracy, and home market factors in terms of the potential severity of the threat they pose to the health of the school market. A 30-item reference list; a glossary; guidelines and statements of policy for fair use of instructional software classroom copying, and off-air recording of broadcast programming; and a sample licensing agreement are included. This is the digital version of the printed book (Copyright © 2004). Testing is not a phase. Software developers should not simply throw software over the wall to test engineers when the developers have finished coding. A coordinated program of peer reviews and testing not only supplements a good software development process, it supports it. A good testing life cycle begins during the requirements elucidation phase of software development, and concludes when the product is ready to install or ship following a successful system test. Nevertheless, there is no one true way to test software; the best one can hope for is to possess a formal testing process that fits the needs of the testers as well as those of the organization and its customers. A formal test plan is more than an early step in the software testing process—it's a vital part of your software development life cycle. This book presents a series of tasks to help you develop a formal testing process model, as well as the inputs and outputs associated with each task. These tasks include: review of program plans development of the formal test plan creation of test documentation (test design, test cases, test software, and test procedures) acquisition of automated testing tools test execution updating the test documentation tailoring the model for projects of all sizes Whether you are an experienced test engineer looking for ways to improve your testing process, a new test engineer hoping to learn how to perform a good testing process, a newly assigned test manager or team leader who needs to learn more about testing, or a process improvement leader, this book will help you maximize your effectiveness.

Software quality stems from two distinctive, but associated, topics in software engineering: software functional quality and software structural quality. Software Quality Engineering studies the tenets of both of these notions, which focus on the efficiency and value of a design, respectively. The text addresses engineering quality on both the application and system levels with attention to Information Systems and Embedded Systems as well as recent developments. Targeted at graduate engineering students and software quality specialists, the book analyzes the relationship between functionality and quality with practical applications to related ISO/IEC JTCI SC7 standards.

Software Quality Assurance: Integrating Testing, Security, and Audit focuses on the importance of software quality and security. It defines various types of testing, recognizes factors that propose value to software quality, and provides theoretical and real-world scenarios that offer value and contribute quality to projects and applications. The practical synopsis on common testing tools helps readers who are in testing jobs or those interested in pursuing careers as testers. It also helps test leaders, test managers, and others who are involved in planning, estimating, executing, and maintaining software. The book is divided into four sections: The first section addresses the basic concepts of software quality, validation and verification, and audits. It covers the major areas of software management, software life cycle, and life cycle processes. The second section is about testing. It discusses test plans and strategy and introduces a step-by-step test design process along with a sample test case. It also examines what a tester or test lead needs to do before and during test execution and how to report after completing the test execution. The third section deals with security breaches and defects that may occur. It discusses documentation and classification of incidences as well as how to handle an occurrence. The fourth and final section provides examples of security issues along with a security policy document and addresses the planning aspects of an information audit. This section also discusses the definition, measurement, and metrics of reliability based on standards and quality metrics methodology CMM models. It discusses the ISO 15504 standard, CMMs, PSP, and TSP and includes an appendix containing a software process improvement sample document.
