Questo libro cerca di capire che cosa rappresenti la cultura nella società medievale, individuata nei differenti settori sociali di consumo, dai più alti e colti ai più popolari e umili. Certo, la letteratura, cultura scritta, non è mai una sola e, forse, nemmeno è sempre letteratura: perché, prima di arrivare a un testo che qualcuno scrive, sono molte le fasi attraverso le quali quello che diventerà un testo sarà passato di voce in voce, di ambiente in ambiente. L’architettura dell’Età moderna, nel volgere dei diversi stili, dal Classicismo al Neoclassico, mostra continui richiami a concezioni architettoniche ispirate al passato medievale, destinati ad influenzare i nuovi edifici non solo negli aspetti formali, ma anche – e soprattutto – rispetto al tipo dell’organismo. Questo volume ha per oggetto un’indagine sul modo in cui tali richiami andarono evolvendosi fra XV e XVIII secolo. La persistenza di concezioni medievali assume particolare rilievo – e di conseguenza è stata principalmente considerata – in riferimento agli edifici di culto. Questo si spiega tenendo presente la ricorrente tendenza del pensiero religioso coevo, a sua volta ispirato a concezioni teologiche e filosofiche medievali, ad influenzare la configurazione di tali edifici. Rientra in questo quadro la riflessione sui modi in cui la riforma cattolica può avere influenzato gli sviluppi dell’architettura religiosa, soprattutto nel periodo compreso fra Cinquecento e metà Seicento. Sono stati presi in esame anche fenomeni di persistenza riguardanti edifici di tipo civile. Essi assumono la maggiore evidenza nelle residenze signorili e padronali situate nel territorio. In particolare, si è concentrata l’attenzione sulle persistenze ispirate alle forme dei castelli, manifestatesi sia attraverso la conservazione degli originari edifici di quella specie, sia attraverso il ricorso alla loro immagine nella configurazione dei nuovi edifici. La persistenza di concezioni medievali è stata prevalentemente considerata rispetto all’Italia, che in questo campo, sino alla fine del secolo XVII, mostrò una riconosciuta preminenza. Il suo esaurimento si accompagnò a un progressivo sviluppo di tali fenomeni in altri paesi. A tale riguardo sono stati elaborati un quadro generale della situazione esistente in Europa fra XVI e XVII secolo e alcuni approfondimenti riguardanti le forme di persistenza manifestatesi in Francia e Gran Bretagna fra XVII e XVIII secolo. Giorgio Simoncini è nato a Roma nel 1929 e si è laureato in architettura nel 1954. Sino alla fine degli anni sessanta ha contemporaneamente svolto attività professionale nel campo dell’architettura e dell’urbanistica e attività didattica nel campo della storia dell’architettura, dapprima come cultore della materia, poi come libero docente. In quel periodo ha vinto il concorso internazionale per il progetto del Monumento di Auschwitz-Birkenau, infine realizzato nel 1967, in collaborazione con lo scultore Pietro Cascella. Dal 1968 al 1972 ha eseguito attività di ricerca per la Fondazione G. Agnelli nel settore dell’organizzazione urbana e territoriale. A partire dal 1969 ha avuto incarichi ufficiali per l’insegnamento della Storia dell’Architettura che poi, dal 1976 al 2005, ha svolto in qualità di professore di ruolo. Dal 1992 al 1999 ha ricoperto la carica di Direttore del Centro di Studi per la Storia dell’Architettura di Roma. Dal 1997 al 2002 ha insegnato Storia del Paesaggio nell’ambito della Scuola di Specializzazione per la Progettazione del Paesaggio (Università La Sapienza). Gli ultimi anni, prima della presente ricerca, sono stati dedicati allo studio storico urbanistico della città di Roma nel ‘400 e ‘500 e a una riflessione sul Monumento di Auschwitz-Birkenau.
