Excerpt from The Relation of Forest Composition and Rate of Growth to Certain Soil Characters Under the present economic conditions a considerable portion of the land area of Connecticut is potential forest land. It is safe to assume that this will be true always. Therefore the wise use Of forest land is one of our outstanding problems. Good policies must be based on a knowledge Of the underlying facts and these facts are often woefully lacking. In 1923, the Station began an intensive Study of the soils of Connecticut (see Bulletin with the hope Of furnishing a sound basis for our future land policy. The soil is an important forest site factor, although, strangely enough, it often has been overlooked. The problem is a broad one and of necessity must be attacked in detail. The studies here reported deal with certain phases of the relationship Of forests to soils. The investigation was undertaken jointly by the Soils and Forestry Departments of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, under the direct supervision of M. F. Morgan, Agronomist, and H. W.
