Traditional societies have always exploited edible wild plants to provide an adequate level of nutrition. These plant resources play a significant role in nutrition, food security and income generation. Agricultural development and cultivation in developing countries are primarily based on subsistence crops and edible wild plant species, and only secondary on the cultivation or utilisation of a wide diversity of food crops. The Solanaceae, to which the genus Solanum L belongs, is a cosmopolitan family containing many essential vegetables, fruits, and ornamentals. Many species of genus Solanum are world-wide weeds of arable land, gardens, contained in soils rich in nitrogen, moderately light with warm situations, which occur from sea to mountain levels. They are widely used as leafy herbs, vegetables, as a source of fruit, and for various medicinal purposes. Therefore, human consumption of their leaves and fruits as food is widespread. Among them is Solanum torvum Swartz, which could be an important staple crop that is being used variously for research purposes world-wide. It is a potential staple crop due to its pharmacological and ethnobotanical importance. This book attempts to uncap all the available information on Solanum torvum Swartz. In Solanaceae: Cultivation, Nutrition and Health, the authors first set out to demonstrate how utilization of soil amendments in agricultural systems is an inexpensive means for limited-resource farmers looking for improvements in crop yield and quality to satisfy consumer needs of healthy food. A separate study considers the variety of biological activities, together with the nutritional composition and low cytotoxicity, of the mature fruits of S. lycocarpum in order to demonstrate that they represent an important food source with chemopreventive and therapeutic properties. Next, the total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant, antibacterial, and allelopathic activities of methanol extract and fractions from ripe fruits of S. lycocarpum were studied to provide knowledge on the total phenolic and total flavonoid content in the methanol extract and fractions, as well as the antioxidant, antibacterial, and allelopathic activities. Afterwards, the oils, fatty acids, and methyl esters from S. lycocarpum fruits were evaluated for their antioxidant potential and allelopathic activity. The allelopathic effect against the seedlings of Lactuca sativa and Allium cepa showed promising results, with predominant effects of growth inhibition of hypocotyls and radicles in the lower concentration tested. In the concluding study, the effects of the ethanol extract and hydroethanol fraction of S. lycocarpum leaves on the growth of the Ehrlich experimental tumor were evaluated using three experimental groups.

Solanaceae family commonly known as nightshades belongs to the order Solanales, in the group of Asterids and class of Magnoliopsida (dicotyledons). The family is angiospermic i.e., flowering plants, and has highly diversified plants ranging from annual to perennial herbs, vines, shrubs, epiphytes, and trees. Solanaceae consists of about 98 genera and 2,700 species worldwide that includes several agricultural, horticultural, medicinal plants, spices, and weeds with highly diverse habitats and ecology. The family is cosmopolitan in distribution having found all over the world, including tropical temperate and desert regions except Antarctica, and is greatly abundant in South and Central America. Based on the fossil tomatillos discovered in the Patagonian region, Argentina, scientists reported that the development of Solanaceae started during the Mesozoic Era. The family, Solanaceae is believed to have originated from the Andean/Amazonian region of South America . The occurrence is thought to have evolved in a wide range of environments, from rain forests with over three meters of annual rainfall to desert with almost no rainfall and mountain with snow and sub-freezing temperatures . Wettstein believed that the Solanaceae had a polyphyletic origin because of their close kinship with several other plant groups . The family was closely related to Scrophulariaceae and was divided into the tribes: Nicandreae, Solanaceae, Datureae, Cestreae, and Salpiglossideae by Wettstein . Bentham and Hooker included the family within Polemoniales, however, Hallier considered it as Tubiflorae, which had been derived from Linaceae. Solanaceae is also one of the most economically important families among the angiosperms and contains crops such as Solanum tuberosum (potato), Solanum lycopersicon (tomato), Solanum melongena (eggplant), Solanum betaceum (tomarillo/tree tomato) Physalis peruviana (Cape gooseberry), Capsicum spp. (pepper) etc. that are important food sources in human civilizations. The family also produces important alkaloids and adds significantly to their medicinal values. Plants such as Nicotiana spp., Atropa belladonna, Hyoscyamus, Mandragora, and Datura spp., etc. are important for the production of drugs in pharmaceutical industries while some have ornamental values (such as Petunia, Brugmansia, Cestrum, Solanum pseudocapsicum etc.) in horticultural fields.
