The use of heat pumps for the utilization of solar energy is studied. Two requirements for a cost-effective system are identified: (1) a special heat pump whose coefficient of performance continues to rise with source temperature over the entire range appropriate for solar assist, and (2) a low-cost collection and storage subsystem able to supply solar energy to the heat pump efficiently at low temperatures. Programs leading to the development of these components are discussed. A solar assisted heat pump system using these components is simulated via a computer, and the results of the simulation are used as the basis for a cost comparison of the proposed system with other solar and conventional systems.

Phase I of this study deals with the determination of the most cost-effective SAHP (Solar-assisted Heat Pump) system. The series (solar-assisted), parallel (solar-boosted), and standard heat pump systems with electric resistance heat backup are emphasized. Performance characteristics of all major SAHP components are determined and used in conjunction with the TRNSYS simulation program to obtain heating and cooling system performance for four different climates: Phoenix, Arizona; New York, New York; Fort Worth, Texas; and Madison, Wisconsin. Material and installation costs are obtained for the SAHP components and are used in a life-cycle cost analysis to determine the economic viability of the various systems. Ground coupling, evacuated tube collectors, and power demand distributions are studied. A marketing analysis is performed to assess the potential of SAHP systems in the residential marketplace. The results of this study indicate that solar-boosted heat pumps ∥ will be more cost effective than solar-assisted (series) heat pumps for the foreseeable future. Since all components for solar-boosted heat pumps are now commercially available, no further development work is needed to optimize the heat pumps for such a system. Furthermore, SAHP systems are not currently cost effective when compared to standard air-to-air heat pumps, nor is there evidence that they will be in the foreseeable future.

The workshop held in Vienna in May 1985, was sponsered by the Joint Research Centre of the Commission of the European Communities, the lEA Solar Heating and Cooling Program and the lEA Advanced Heat Pump Program. The first workshop was held in Ispra in September 1982 /1/.Both workshop were the result of a joint activity between the lEA Solar Heating and Cooling program and the Joint Research Centre Ispra, concerning Solar Assisted Heat Pump Systems with Ground Coupled Storage. The objective of this activity is to assure a regular exchange of information between experts active in the different fields involved in this technology: solar energy, heat pumps and heat storage. About 45 papers were presented covering almost all aspects of this technology. This paper gives an overview of the material presented and the main conclusions. The overview of the papers was made by M. Catan, J. Dalenback and D. van Hattem.

Major areas of work include a heat pump hardware simulator which will obtain experimental data on the performance potential of the heat pump in the 40 to 100/sup 0/F source temperature range; the potential of ground coupled storage in solar assisted heat pump systems; and the impact of the heat pump on solar collector design and cost.
