Solar ponds offer perhaps the simplest technique for conversion of solar energy to thermal energy, which can be used for industrial process heat. It is unique in its capability in acting both as collector and storage. Further, the cost of solar pond per unit area is less than any active collectors available today. Combination of these economic and technical factors make solar ponds attractive as a fuel saver in IPH applications. Detailed calculations are given for solar ponds in two specific applications: providing hot water for aluminum can washing in a manufacturing plant and hot water for washing in a large commercial laundry. With the help of computer codes developed at SERI for other solar IPH systems, it is shown that solar ponds are far more cost effective than any other solar IPH technology for these applications.

Solar thermal energy generated by a salinity gradient solar pond (SGSP) is one of the most promising techniques for providing heat for desalination and other applications. A solar pond is a unique, free-energy-source system for collecting, converting and storing solar energy. Saudi Arabia is one of the most solar-radiation abundant countries on the planet, but the region also has limited water resources. Studying the thermal behaviour of a SGSP under Saudi Arabian conditions for heat generation for a thermal desalination application is the aim of this study. An empirical equation is developed and a Matlab script is programmed to calculate hourly-averaged daily solar radiation (from sunrise to sunset). The results are validated through NASA's 22-year-average data for solar radiation. Mathematical models are developed to describe and simulate the thermal behaviour of a SGSP. The results are compared with a SGSP in Kuwait; the results of the steady state model are sufficiently close to the measurements. The efficiency of a solar pond depends on the salt gradient stability in the middle non-convecting zone, and the diffusion and erosion of these salt layers are considered in this study. The proposed SGSP in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has an area of 100 x 100m2, and the predicted temperature of the storage zone is about 100De. Higher temperatures can be reached through improved insulation and covering the surface. Additionally, an SGSP in a cold climate is suggested to compare with and test our model. The University of Surrey SGSP exceeded 80De. This renewable and sustainable heat source can be employed in desalination; the energy cost of desalinated water constitutes over 50% of operating costs. The heat removal process from the solar pond is investigated, and coupling the proposed solar pond with a Multi-Effect Evaporator (MEE) is described; the effects of various factors on the SGSP-MEE coupling are studied.

This report first describes the different types of solar ponds including the nonconvecting salt gradient pond and various saltless pond designs. It then discusses the availability and cost of salts for salt gradient ponds, and compares the economics of salty and saltless ponds as a function of salt cost. A simple computational model is developed to approximate solar pond performance. This model is later used to size solar ponds for district heating and industrial process heat applications. For district heating, ponds are sized to provide space conditioning for a group of homes, in different regions of the United States. Size requirements is on the order of one acre for a group of 25 to 50 homes. An economic analysis is performed of solar ponds used in two industrial process heat applications. The analysis finds that solar ponds are competitive when conventional heat sources are priced at $5 per million Btu and expected to rise in price at a rate of 10% per year. The application of solar ponds to the generation of electricity is also discussed. Total solar pond potential for displacing conventional energy sources is estimated in the range of from one to six quadrillion Btu per year in the near and intermediate future.

A major problem in underdeveloped countries is deforestation due to the overuse of firewood for cooking. Salt gradient solar ponds may provide an important solution. Solar ponds have 24-hour storage, so that cooking may be done conveniently at any time. Sealed pots filled with food may be lowered and left several hours to cook in the depths of the salt gradient pond. Such a pond at Madras, India, sized to serve 100 families would be about 350 m2 in surface area and 3.3 m in depth. A stand of trees sufficient to serve the same cooking load on a sustainable basis, using today's inefficient wood cookstoves, would cover about 1,500 times as much land area. Salt gradient ponds may also be used to heat water for washing or for simple industries such as beer-making and fabric-dyeing. Salt gradient solar ponds used in this manner are simple, passive solar devices, requiring primarily readily available tools, materials, and labor for their construction and maintenance.
