Despite the attention paid to the Afrikakorps over the years, it was the numerically far superior forces of the Italian Army that held the line and formed the bulk of the fighting power available to the Axis powers during the War in the Desert from 1941 through to 1943. Their performance has been unfairly criticised over the years – the best units of the Italian Army were equal to those of the British and Germans – but they suffered from a lack of mobility and poor equipment that made it impossible for them to meet mobile British forces on anywhere near equal terms. Despite this, the Italian Army went through many changes through the period, with the introduction of a variety of elite units – armoured, mechanised and parachute divisions that did much to restore the fighting reputation of the Italian soldier in the desert war. Their German allies belatedly acknowledged this with the redesignation of Panzerarmee Afrika as 1st Italian Army in February 1943. This title details recruitment, organisation and experience of the Italian forces in this theatre, casting new light on a force whose fighting power and capabilities have been unfairly ignored and maligned for too long.

North Carolina S Civil War Soldiers Volume 1 1861 written by Barry Munson and has been published by Lulu.com this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-12-12 with History categories.

Material for this volume was taken from W. W. Holden's Raleigh newspaper, the North Carolina Standard. These articles from the year 1861, written by soldiers and citizens who sent letters and telegrams for publication, are the raw material of history, presented without an historian's comments or revisions. During this period newspapers, both, Southern and Northern, relied heavily on citizens to submit first-hand accounts of the conflict. Unfortunately, Southern newspapers were far behind the Northern ones in employing professional war correspondents to record the conflict. This made Southern citizen journalists extremely critical to the spreading the war news across the Southern states.

Gloucestershire And North Bristol Soldiers On The Somme written by Nick Thornicroft and has been published by The History Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-06-01 with History categories.

When war broke out in 1914 there was a widespread sense of optimism among the British public. Fired by patriotic fervour and pride in their nation, many were convinced that 'it would all be over by Christmas' and young men rushed to join the army and share in the 'honour and glory' of war. These illusions were swiftly lost as a war of attrition developed; advances on both sides were small and casualties high. Even with this background, the slaughter on 1 July 1916 of thousands of British soldiers, who went over the top to their deaths on the Somme, shocked a world increasingly conditioned to the realities of armed conflict. Nick Thornicroft delves into the heart of the British Army on the blackest day in its history and gives a vivid portrayal of Gloucestershire soldiers in the heat of battle; these ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances, fighting with incredible bravery for their country's future. Through assiduous research and compassion for his subject, Nick Thornicroft has woven the experiences of Gloucestershire and North Bristol's soldiers into the wider military story, and in doing so brings a human aspect to one of the most inhuman battles in history.

This book documents electric power requirements for the dismounted soldier on future Army battlefields, describes advanced energy concepts, and provides an integrated assessment of technologies likely to affect limitations and needs in the future. It surveys technologies associated with both supply and demand including: energy sources and systems; low power electronics and design; communications, computers, displays, and sensors; and networks, protocols, and operations. Advanced concepts discussed are predicated on continued development by the Army of soldier systems similar to the Land Warrior system on which the committee bases its projections on energy use. Finally, the volume proposes twenty research objectives to achieve energy goals in the 2025 time frame.

At the end of July 1981, world heads of state gathered in London for the wedding of Price Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. Among those present was President Jawara of the Gambia, whose absence was exploited by Marxist rebels to overthrow him. Rightly fearing armed intervention from neighbouring Senegal, the new revolutionary council seized hostages including one of the President's wives and several of his children and emptied the prisons in a desperate search for allies in the coming struggle. In the first couple of days, as opposing factions of the Gambian police force wrestled for control, many of the released prisoners succumbed to the temptation to settle old scores, and almost two thousand Gambians lost their lives. In tourist beach hotels several hundred Europeans waited and feared the worst. Only one group of men was considered capable of stabilising the situation the legendary Special Air Service the SAS! So, at Jawara's request, three men of SAS 22 Regiment were sent into this cauldron, supposedly to advise the President and his Senegalese allies. But within days, circumstances and the men's bravado turned them into the spearhead of the counter-revolution, heavily embroiled in both the pursuit of heavily armed criminals and the dangerously delicate business of rescuing hostages. Soldier N SAS: The Gambian Bluff is the electrifying story of how, against all the odds, these three highly skilled soldiers defeated the rebels and restored President Jawara to power.
