Excerpt from In the Line of Battle: Soldiers Stories of the War In dealing with these records I have tried to be a faithful interpreter or reproducer of a tale that has been told to me. I have invited a man to tell his story as it came into his mind, and to look upon me simply as a means of putting it into concrete and coherent form, and as a medium between himself and the reader. The greatest difficulty that had to be overcome was a narrator's reluctance to speak Of his own achieve ments, though he never failed to wax enthusiastic when telling Of the doings Of his comrades. Nothing has left a deeper impression on my mind than the generous praise which a gunner, say, has bestowed upon the infantry, and the blessings that the infantry have invoked upon the gunners. Never in any of Great Britain's wars has there been such an exhibition of universal esprit de corps as we have witnessed in this stupendous conflict between civilisation and freedom and cultured barbarism and tyranny. Excerpt from Soldiers Stories of the War I have been fortunate in getting a good deal of ex elusive matter - the full record of the noble achieve ment of L Battery, Royal Horse Artillery, for example, has not been given anywhere in such detail as is presented here, and the same remark applies to the story of the three torpedoed cruisers. During the earlier periods of the war British soldiers told me tales of barbarities and outrages committed by German troops which were so terrible that it was impossible to believe them, and I omitted many of these details from the finished stories; but I know now, from reading the Report of the Committee on Alleged German Outrages, presided over by Viscount Bryce, formerly British Ambassador at Washington. Excerpt from Stories of Our Soldiers: War Reminiscences The name which the Journal has always held as a stanch friend of the soldiers led at once to the expectation of a camp fire gathering which should be unique in size and inter esting in character, and the expectation has been more than realized Not only have hun dreds of New England veterans, privates, captains, colonels and generals contributed their stories of experiences to swell the history, but the popular voice of appreciation greeting the work tells of its attractiveness. It does not seem right that these valuable personal records of the work of our New England soldiers should pass away without permanent publication, and the Journal, there fore, has prepared from the sketches already published a volume of the leading articles, with a number of. The supplementary articles, and illustrated them with the pictures used in the Journal stories. These pictures are of particular value, as many of them can be found in no other place, the Journal having had them made especially for the reminiscences from war-time photographs loaned by the possessors. Excerpt from The Children's Story of the War I need not tell you that the statement in the last sent was quite untrue. We had suffered a great reverse, but our forces had not been beaten. For an army to be beaten means that it has been put out of action and rendered incapable of fighting again. Our line had fallen back, but it was unbroken, and was ready to continue the fight at are? Moment. The eagerness of the Kaiser to claim a victory b ore his work was done could only be explained by the necessit for heartening his own peo le and preparing them for the a l tale of losses which woul soon have to be unfolded. Excerpt from A Soldier's Story of the War: Including the Marches and Battles of the Washington Artillery, and of Other Louisiana Troops Do not these fancies come to all of us? Do not some of our old men who dry up and drop off, and tearful-eyed women who still pray for shelter and protection from beggary - do not the surviving soldiers who find it hard to cope in skill or robust health with younger rivals brood over these memories? My excuse for writing this narrative is that I never at first intended it; I thought only to pass a wearisome hour in a letter to an old friend. Once commenced, I could not end; at the same time many old comrades, the subject once suggested, begged me if I proposed writing about the war at all, toutako for my theme the soldiers who went from Louisiana. I have tried to do this, though at the same time attempting only a rough military narrative. I want only to try and show how large bodies of our young men went through the transformation of the citizen into the soldier. How we learned and became reconciled to the rough life of camp; consented to new ways of think ing and living, and suffered, as it were, a general breaking up and wreck of our previous identity and existence. Excerpt from A Soldier's Son The war was over - the cruel, cruel war; and Father and Uncle Howard were on their way home. Children's voices, in every key of joy and thanksgiving, sang the happy news from morning to night. The white, strained look faded from Mother's face, and she became her Old, bright self again. Now that they were over, the Children tried to forget how long and sad and weary the days had been during which the Sight Of the post bag, and the morning newspaper, almost took everyone's breath away, until the columns of War news had been hastily scanned before taking letters and papers to Mother's room. Then came the day when Uncle Howard's name was amongst the seriously wounded, and there was a brief account Of how he had saved the guns, and then returning into the firing line to pick up a wounded soldier, had himself been dangerously wounded. The children thought of Uncle Howard's delicate young motherless boy, and sobbed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Recollections of the Eventful Life of a Soldier The ensuing narrative, from its outset to its close in 1814, embraces a period of about twenty-one years, fifteen of which relate to the author's boyhood, and the remain ing six to his career in the army. The only part of the soldier's story which begets a feeling of disappointment is its abrupt termination. The vicissitudes of' his subsequent career might have formed an interesting, though melan choly, sequel to the present volume. The few particulars we have gathered refer chiefly to that period of his life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
