O livro é composto por pequenas histórias recolhidas, na sua maioria, da tradição oral das culturas abordadas. O primeiro capítulo é dedicado à Índia e começa pela narrativa do surgimento do AUM, a partícula universal de som, e segue com um texto sobre as palavras do sânscrito que relacionam o micro e o macro cosmos. Em seguida é contada a história de Tansen, cantor do século XVI, que serviu o imperador Akbar e inaugurou a linhagem espiritual da qual o músico Ravi Shankar fez parte. O segundo capítulo é dedicado à antiguidade grega e narra o mito de Orfeu para relacionar Pitágoras, pai da teoria musical do ocidente, às religiões òrficas surgidas no sec. IV a.c., religião de homens que meditavam a partir das cordas da lira. A base para desenvolver o pensamento teórico do estudo da physis veio da prática meditativa dos pitagóricos. Antes de explicar o pensamento numérico de Pitágoras, há uma narrativa do encontro do filósofo com um xamã da Ásia central, Abaris Skywaker, que vai reconhecer no filósofo a reencarnação do deus Apolo e trocar sabedorias e informações vindas do oriente. O terceiro capítulo é dedicado à Turquia e começa com uma pequena narrativa sobre o canto-reza muçulmano, o Adhan. Segue a história do encontro entre Mevlana Rumi e Shams de Tabriz na cidade de Konia, centro da Turquia, razão dos poemas clássicos Divan de Shams de Tabriz e que deram origem ao Sama. Em árabe, Sama quer dizer audição e é o nome da dança giratória meditativa dos dervishes sufis, uma vertente mística do islamismo. Nesse capítulo a música e o som, novamente, aparecem como resultado da harmonia entre o micro e macro cosmos. O quarto capítulo é dedicado à África, o berço da música popular brasileira e, além do texto para diferenciar a África ao sul do Saara da cultura letrada e islâmica ao norte do Saara, há um conto sobre o deus Nymabé, criador do povo bantu e uma adaptação para a história do menino Akim de um poema chamado Canção dos Homens , ambos de Gana. Por fim, o último capítulo é dedicado aos indígenas do Brasil com narrativas inspiradas em histórias contadas por Kaka Werá, Davi Kopenawa e Leonardo Boff, sobre a participação do som na vida da comunidade e reinterpretadas com o propósito de fazer do som o protagonista das narrativas. As pesquisas foram feitas em livros de história, de música, de filosofia, de religião, de poesia e alguns livros didáticos que trabalham com as geografias indicadas. No fim, há um texto sobre a da prática social da música em cada uma das culturas ao longo do tempo, e um fechamento para pensar a possibilidade de novas formas de estudar a linguagem musical, uma abordagem transdisciplinar para uma linguagem artística presente em diferentes cosmogonias.
