Somali Foreign Policy, 1960 -1990: An Analysis of Thirty Years of Diplomatic History uses theories of state behaviour to interrogate Somali foreign policy during the years between independence in 1960 and state collapse in 1991 and connects this to the dynamics of the civil war and the conflicts that followed the state collapse. The book is an important contribution to the issue of the Somali state collapse and its cascading impacts on the country, including its foreign policy. It also answers a number of questions on inter-state conflicts in Africa and the ways in which armed conflicts on the continent arise from a combination of internal and external factors. ________________________________________ The author, Dr. Ibrahim Farah, a Somali academic and former lecturer at the University of Nairobi, is the founder and head of the research unit of the Mogadishu-based Justice & Peace Network (aka Maandeeq--JPN), a global Somali political movement. Dr. Farah has some 30 years' experience in academic teaching and research, humanitarian aid and development cooperation as well as in socio-political, and security analysis. He is also an expert in strategic peace-building and state-building processes.

From the historical perspective, the Cold War can be regarded as an extension and continuation of colonialism via different means. The tools and methods that the superpowers, as well as local allies used, were in many ways similar to those desired during the last stage of European colonialism: gigantic economic and social projects, the promises of progress and modernization to the supporters, and almost death to the opponents or those who dare to step on the way of progress. The tragedy of the history of the Cold War in general and of the Cold War in the countries of the Third World, in particular, showed that two historical projects were originally anti-colonial, however, at last, they became the part of significantly older domination patter, due to intensity and severity of the confrontation, as well as the high stakes they considered were involved and practically apocalyptic fear of the situation when the opponent wins. In other words, even though both Soviet Union and the United States opposed colonialism and its reflections, they practically did the same in their own version of modernity, like their predecessors (for instance, France and Britain with their colonial projects of the 19th and 20th centuries). These methods were focused on implementing ecological, demographic, and cultural change in the societies of the Third World while utilizing military power to defeat the states that dare to resist. ABOUT THE AUTHOR MOHAMED YOUSSOUF Rachid, was born on a grey morning under the blazing sun of a hot summer in Djibouti city in 1990. Animator, investigative journalist, essayist of the new independent media of the Horn of Africa called The Voice of Djibouti (LVD), the author has a passion for the issue of foreign policy, authors and historians of the Horn of Africa and began his socio-political commitment very early thanks to these different courses and his tours in West Africa. Greatly interested in the world of literature, foreign civilization and international relations, the Djiboutian enarque is guided by his pen through which he tries to rediscover the history of the Horn of Africa; the issue of geopolitics, post-colonial recomposition and the reconquest of Islam in these lost territories. Animator of political programs, former head of programming, much sought after by international or regional media such as “bbc, voa” ...

There is very little scholarship on the history of political Islam in Somalia that takes seriously both historical forces as well as the very ideas and internal organization of the Islamic movements. This book reconstructs the history of modern and moderate Islamic movement in Somalia. It covers 50 years of turbulent Somali history, in which civilian governments, military dictatorships, armed opposition factions, and Islamic movements were interacting and shaping the Somali history. It divides Islamic development in Somalia into four historical periods: the Islamic revival (1800-1950), the Islamic consciousness ( 1950-1967), the Islamic awakening (1967-1978) and the Islamic movements (1978-2000).The book provides a detailed and empirically rich narrative of the Islah Movement as a case study which has influenced and made an impact on other Islamist organizations in recent decades. The author provides an insider's view of the Islamic Movement being one of the leaders of Islah.

In the last three decades, Somalia has been associated with such horrible terms as 'state collapse', 'civil wars', 'foreign intervention', 'warlordism', 'famine', 'piracy' and 'terrorism'. This depiction was in contradiction to its earlier images as the cradle of the human race, the kernel of ancient civilizations, the land of Punt, a homogeneous nation-state and the first democratic state in Africa. So how did things fall apart in the country? This Volume 1 of a two-volume narrative, Dr. Abdullahi explores the history of the people of Somali peninsula since ancient times, the advent of Islam and colonialism, the rise and fall of Somali nationalism and the perspectives of the Somali state collapse. The book uses a unique thematic approach and analysis to make sense of Somali history by emphasizing the responsibility of Somali political elites in creating and perpetuating the disastrous conditions in their country.

Somalia is often used as an emblem of a collapsed state. This is somewhat of a paradox given that in previous decades the country was one of the most unified states in Africa and one of the first democracies on the continent. In the last three decades however the country has faced enormous challenges including civil wars and extremism in the name of Islam. The book - probably one of the first to link Islam, Islamism and Transitional Justice with the Somali State recovery project - offers unique analyses of these themes and argues that recovering the Somali state will largely be contingent upon the skillful reconciliation between tradition and modernity, Islam and state and between the secular and the sacred.
