En medio de un retiro, la alumna Kamiya aprovecha la oportunidad para inmiscuirse por los pasillos del convento y en una de sus salas descubre una Enciclopedia Universal del Arte. En cada uno de los trece cuentos que componen este libro, sobrevuela la figura del koan, esa historia breve propia de la filosofía zen que propicia una mirada no convencional sobre la realidad, un punto de vista no habilitado por el sistema. Y esto se debe a la contemplación sosegada, característica de la escritura de Alejandra Kamiya, que transforma los hechos y los objetos más cotidianos, desde la descripción de la cocción de un pan hasta la intimidad de una pareja o la muerte de un padre, en pequeñas odas a la belleza y a la vida.
