Excerpt from Some Facts About John Paul Jones Thanks to the generous and untiring zeal Of our late ambas sador to France, the grave of John Paul Jones has recently been discovered in Paris, and his remains have been removed by the governrrient to this country for interment at Annapolis. This discovery has revived the interest which our people have always taken in the career of this illustrious captain Of the seas, and has of late provoked much discussion in the maga zines and newspapers Of the various incidents in his life, and, in particular, of the reason for his change of name. The reason for this change of name has ever been a puzzle to his biographers. Most Of them pass it by with the mere state ment that he changed his name for unknown reasons. Some few attempt to account for it upon theories, which, while they may be plausible, yet do not appeal to the intelli gent reader. Of these there are three, which perhaps seem most plausible, and which, one or another, are generally accepted as true by most people. I will proceed to give these, and the reasons which occur to me for rejecting them as nu sound an-d without anything but conjecture to support them. Excerpt from The Story of John Paul Jones He was the most precious and valuable of all that little vessel's precious cargo, including the ship's company, for he turned out to be the fa mous and gallant John Paul Jones. The first thing for us to do in going over the life and brave deeds of Paul Jones, is to take away his last name, which he had no right to at all. He took it, as the English said he took many other things without any just claims: However this may be, his right name was simply John Paul, and he was born on the 6th of July, 1747. Like several other Revolutionary heroes, he was not born in the country whose glorious history he helped to make, but on a fine old estate in the parish of Kirk-bean, Scotland. And like many another great man, his parents were poor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Paul Jones In after times, when the name of Jones became the subject of romantic interest, an effort was made to assign to him what was thought a nobler origin, as the natural son' of the Earl of Selkirk, or of Mr. Craik. As if the brand of illegitimacy, and the stigma on a mother's fame, would be more than compensated by an association with noble names, or a sinister descent from a Scottish earl or from a bonnet laird best known to fame by the fact of our hero being the son of his gardener, would be a more fitting introduction to a career of glory, than birth in honourable wedlock, of humble but honest parents. These calnmnies, though intended for commendations, were falsified by the unsullied character of the wife of John Paul, and by the happiness of their union. For a corking tale of the sea it would be hard to find in all fiction a story to equal that of John Paul Jones, a figure of sober history. Yet history was not so "sober" after all, in those days when piracy was an actual fact, and even nations at times winked at privateering on the high seas. Jones was born with a love of the salt spray in his nostrils. He came to this country as a mere lad, but already a skilled sailor. When the Revolution broke out, he obtained command of a ship, and was the first to fly the Stars-and-Stripes in foreign waters. Then came his deeds of daring against the British Navy, and his repeated victories over tremendous odds. The fight between the Bon Homme Richard and the Serapis is a classic. "Surrender?" he cried with most of his rigging shot away, and his vessel sinking, "Why, I have just begun to fight!"Belated honors were done to his memory, a few years ago, when his body was brought home from a neglected grave in France, and reinterred at Annapolis with all the honors in the gift of the nation. When the readers young and old lay aside this thrilling story, they also will understand why America honors his memory. He may be regarded as the founder of the United States Navy. His flag, whether flying at the masthead of some saucy little sloop-of-war or on a more formidable ship of the line, never knew what it was to be hauled down in defeat. His name has become a tradition among all sea fighters.

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of John Paul Jones, Vol. 1 The fame of Paul Jones has been the sport of romance and the plaything of tradition ever since the early days of his glorious association with America's struggle for independence. Bringing terror to the simple natives of the stricken British coasts by his descents upon their unprotected ports, hero of wellnigh impossible exploits and of battles fought by moonlight under the lee of their headlands, his name passed into the domain of romantic legend and was one to conjure with. Chapbooks depicted him in highly colored prints, bloodthirsty and terrible, and mothers frightened their children with the bare mention of his name. During the years shortly following his death, history and romance alike were busy with his name. But these histories are now out of print, and only to be found in rare collections or on the reference shelves of public libraries, and the romances have ceased to charm. The patriotic services of General Horace Porter in discovering the hero's forgotten remains and bringing them to America amid manifold honors to a permanent and glorious resting-place at Annapolis have revived public interest in his character and deeds. Excerpt from Paul Jones: His Exploits in English Seas During 1778-1780; Contemporary Accounts Collected, From English Newspapers With a Complete Bibliography John paul jones has received a liberal share of historical attention, as the bibliography which forms a large part of this volume shows, since he stepped forth as a free citizen of the world, in defence Of the violated rights of mankind. Research and romance have alike combined to exalt and immortalize his fame. Coming into possession not long ago of the files of the London daily newspapers for 1778-1779, I was struck with the fine English and clear statements of the writers of the day in recording the exploits of the naval adventurer, and conceived the notion that if these were aligned they would form a better record of the two campaigns than that furnished by any his torian. SO I have ventured to put them together. The modern newspaper has little time for the accu rate adjustment of news value. Exploration of the files for the establishment of basic facts is one of the sorest trials of the writers of history, because there is so much rumor, so much spreading, so much desire to make the most of passing interest, and so great a tendency to prefer anticipation to conclusion. Besides, few events are complete in themselves and must be judged by their ultimate, and Often remote, results. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of John Paul Jones, Vol. 2 Sir Walter Scott has left an account of his boyish recollection of the terror which paralyzed the country at the mention of the hated name of Paul Jones. In a letter to Miss Edgeworth of February 24, 1824, he states that he was nine years old in 1779, and well recollected the ma randing crews of Paul Jones. He remarks also upon the extraordinary change in the military state of Edinburgh which took place after Jones's appearance. Originally furnished with only three companies of men under arms, the city immediately after was capable of raising five thou sand with complete appointments, cavalry, artillery, and infantry enough to have taken Paul Jones and his whole equipage.
