From a personally assembled database of 13,859 classical musicians, What Killed the Great and not so Great Composers delves into the medical histories of a wide variety of composers from both a musical and medical standpoint. Biographies of musicians from Johann Sebastian Bach of the Baroque period to Benjamin Britten of the Modern era explore in depth their illnesses and the impact their diseases had on musical productivity. Other chapters referenced to specific composers are devoted to such diverse ailments as deafness, mental disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, surgery and war injuries, to name a few. A unique section of statistics and demographics analyzes various aspects of composers’ lives such as their longevity related to contemporaneous nonmusical populations, the incidence of various illnesses they experienced over the centuries and the type of medical problems suffered by the so-called top 100 classical musicians. Although a precise and complete accounting of the great composers’ ailments may never be possible, a general understanding of the medical problems experienced by these unique individuals, nevertheless, can heighten one’s appreciation of their creative processes despite the hardships imposed by their physical and mental illnesses. Although some individuals surrendered to their disabilities for a variety of reasons, others were able to rise above their infirmities and produce the wonderful music mankind has enjoyed through the centuries.

"Bernard Shaw's essays on music include some of the most scintillating ever written on the subject. In this volume, Louis Crompton has brought together Shaw's major articles on Bach, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, and a host of other composers, articles culled from six miscellaneous volumes of criticism made up largely of untitled reviews. Concert goers and opera enthusiasts will enjoy comparing Shaw's views of familiar works with their own, and professional music critics will find much to engage them in his pungent opinions. Throughout these pages Shaw's sparkling wit is everywhere in evidence, along with the intellectual vigor that him one of the mentors of his age. Crompton's extensive introduction discusses Shaw's views on musical greatness and traces connections between his thinking on music and the social and aesthetic currents of his time."--Publisher's description.

"Gioachino Rossini was one of the most influential as well as one of the most industrious and emotionally complex of the great nineteenth-century composers. Between 1810 and 1829, he wrote thirty-nine operas, a body of work, comic and serious, which transformed Italian opera, and radically altered the course of opera in France." "His retirement from operatic composition in 1829, at the age of 37, was widely assumed to be the act of a talented but lazy man. In reality, political events and a series of debilitating illnesses were the determining factors. After drafting the Stabat mater in 1832, Rossini wrote no music of consequence for the best part of twenty-five years, before the clouds lifted and he began composing again in Paris in the late 1850s. During this glorious Indian summer of his career, he wrote 150 songs and solo piano pieces - his 'Sins of Old Age' - and his final masterpiece, the Petite Messe solennelle." "The image of Rossini as a gifted but feckless amateur - the witty, high-spirited bon vivant who dashed off The Barber of Seville in a mere thirteen days - persisted down the years, until the centenary of his death in 1968 inaugurated a process of re-evaluation by scholars, performers, and writers. The original 1985 edition of Richard Osborn's Rossini redefined the life and provided detailed analyses of the complete Rossini oeuvre. Twenty years on, all Rossini's operas have been staged and recorded, a Critical Edition of his works is well advanced, and a scholarly edition of his correspondence, including 250 previously unknown letters from Rossini to his parents, is in progress."--BOOK JACKET.

Excerpt from Great Composers and Their Work This work does not pretend to give a complete presentation Of musical biography. Many Of the lesser composers who did not influence musical history in any way have been omitted from its pages, or dismissed with a mere mention. It has been the effort Of the author, however, to bring to gether the lives of the great composers in such a manner that the average reader (with out any technical knowledge Of music) may understand how their work aided in musical development, and in what degree their schools were interwoven. In order to make this point more clear, the chronological order has not been adhered to where a departure from it seemed to make more definite the influence. The Great German Composers is a classical music biography collection by George T. Ferris. The canon of classical music has always been brimming with works of musicians and composers of German origin. From 16th century icons Bach and Handel through to Wagner, Germany has consistently produced the most gifted and influential musicians in the world. Bach invented modern music and this music brought to its artistic peaks by fellow Germans, Mozart and Beethoven. The lives and achievements of these composers are described here along with other musical luminaries such as Chopin, Gluck, Hayden and Weber. This fascinating volume is a must read for anyone for whom music is an essential part of life. Contents: Bach -- Handel -- Gluck -- Haydn -- Mozart -- Beethoven -- Schubert, Schumann, and Franz -- Chopin -- Weber -- Mendelssohn -- Richard Wagner. Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 - 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Goldberg Variations, and vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach Revival he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time. The Bach family already counted several composers when Johann Sebastian was born as the last child of a city musician in Eisenach. After becoming an orphan at age 10, he lived for five years with his eldest brother, after which he continued his musical development in Lüneburg. From 1703 he was back in Thuringia, working as a musician for Protestant churches in Arnstadt and Mühlhausen and, for longer stretches of time, at courts in Weimar--where he expanded his repertoire for the organ--and Köthen--where he was mostly engaged with chamber music.
