Excerpt from Some Practical Hints on Wood Engraving for the Instruction of Reviewers The object of the following treatise is to help the general public (that is, those who had not the good fortune to read the Atlantic Monthly for June) toward some accuracy of judgment as to what is good and what bad in Engraving-on-Wood. What is said may also have an interest and be of advantage to engravers. The remarks interspersed for the special benefit of Reviewers whose ignorance evaded the Atlantic teaching will not perhaps acquire for me their spontaneous thanks. I have been compelled however to take the risk, said Reviewers' blunders serving me as texts, themselves as convenient blackboards whereupon my Hints might be made more sufficiently conspicuous.
