Excerpt from Some Principles of Teaching as Applied to the Sunday-School One of the most hopeful signs of improvement in the work of the Sunday-school is the noticeable increase in recent years in books and pamphlets on the training of Sunday-school teachers. The scope of work which is now regarded as essential for teachers in the Sunday-school has gradually enlarged. Knowledge of the Bible alone is no longer regarded as the only qualification for those who instruct the youth of the church in morals and religion. Not only must they be familiar with the Scriptures, the subject-matter to be taught, but Sunday-school teachers should also be familiar with the best and most practicable principles of teaching and with certain facts about child life and child development. A thorough knowledge of the Bible, and how to teach it, and a familiarity with pedagogy and with child psychology, are some of the needs of the teacher in the Sunday-school today. This little book is the result of some work which the author did, as leader of a training class of Sunday-school teachers in Durham, North Carolina, in the winter and spring of 1914, and was suggested by an outline prepared for the New York Sunday-school Association by Professor George A. Coe, of Union Theological Seminary, New York City. The book is meant to be a practical aid to those who have had little or no opportunity to acquaint themselves with certain principles of teaching and certain facts of child psychology which may be used to advantage in Sunday-school teaching. Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The last ten years have seen greater progress in religious education than any preceding decade, perhaps greater than any five decades. When this book was first published, a little over eight years ago, it advocated many reforms which have now become accomplished facts. On the educational principles then laid down the school has been reorganised or at least the principles have been accepted and the newer methods accepted so that it is no longer necessary to treat them in a prophetic manner except to explain their elabo ration and intrication and to look forward to their further development. In addition so many new opportunities have opened up to the school and, as our social life has changed, some new duties have appeared before it. Perhaps the need for a thorough revision of a book on methods is the best evidence of the progress and increased efficiency of the Sunday school. Excerpt from Principles of Teaching Two texts have been written for the teacher training program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since Dr. Adam S. Bennion's Book Principles of Teaching was published, yet in spite of the fact that this book has been out of print several years so many requests for it have poured in that the General Superintendency has decided to satisfy the demand with this new edition. This book with its classic qualities in many ways fits Shakespeare's description of a beautiful woman when he said, Age cannot wither her nor custom dim her in finite variety. Anyone who knows Dr. Bennion or has read his writings knows that neither custom nor age has dimmed his infinite variety. Furthermore, a glance at the table of contents of this book will reveal the fact that the problems and principles treated herein are just as real today as they were when the text was written. This little volume is republished in the h0pe that it again will become one of the basic texts in the teacher training program and fulfill its mission as an instrument in the hands of sincere people who have the devout wish of learning how to teach the principles of the gospel by the power of the Holy Spirit. Excerpt from The Ideal Adult Class in the Sunday-School: A Manual of Principles and Methods The adult class in the Sunday-school, as we know it, is the product of the last few years. It is a creation of the new Sunday-school stimulus, and in turn it has done much to inspire that stimulus. And the adult class of the present day is so new that it requires a new sort of teacher to guide it in the study of the Bible. This new sort of teacher must be willing to break with traditions. He must be willing to forego the absolutism of the old-fashioned adult-class teacher, and organize his class with directing officers and committees. He must be ready to adopt a new kind of recitation, or no recitation at all. He must accept a quite new relation between the class and the teacher. In the old days the pupils - the few that came at all - placed the teacher on a pedestal and bowed down before him. In these new days the teacher is only the senior partner in a company of business associates, seeking to do busi ness for the Master. The ideal adult-class teacher must also be inventive. As he is keen to recognize problems, he must be shrewd to meet them with his own devices. For example, does he note a lack of original work and study? Then he must make all kinds of alluring assignments of home work - the preparation of charts, of map talks, of talks on definite themes connected with the lesson subject. Excerpt from Principles and Ideals for the Sunday School: Essay in Religious Pedagogy The authors of this little book have been for years engaged in the work of the Sunday school as teachers and officers, and for almost as long time have been occupied as biblical instructors, training young men for the Christian ministry. For a number of years we have also had a share in the editorial conduct of the Biblical World, a journal devoted to the promotion and improvement of biblical study, both private and in schools of various kinds. Portions of the following chapters appeared in their original form as editorials in the Biblical World. They are republished here in revised form, with the addition of several chapters not previously printed, in the hope that they may contribute somewhat to that further development and improvement of the Sunday school so imperatively demanded by its own splendid past and the widening horizon and better methods of biblical study. In particular it is hoped that they will be of service to the students for the ministry with whom we are associated in the Divinity School of the University of Chicago.
