Excerpt from Some Real Wants and Bomb Legitimate Claims of the Working Classes That this interest should be flattering and gratifying to the class on whose behalf it is expressed, is what might naturally be anticipated. Yet such is not the case. The hulking navvy, the shrewd mechanic, and nine-tenths of the artisans and labourers are either utterly indifferent to the regard professed towards them, or consider it a sham, adopted by men who have ulterior objects in view. In consequence they are accused of ingratitude. Much is done for them, and they appreciate it not, is now the complaint of many whose sentiments are under going a reactionary process. That the really great and wise and learned men of the day should regard these benevolent expres sions of feeling with delight is also what might reasonably be expected. But neither is this the case. As a rule, the leading philanthropists are all men of third or fourth rate standing in every respect. The doubt, therefore, suggests itself, is the deep interest, so loudly trumpeted, genuine? Is it real and sincere; or is it mere food for tea-table prattle and gossip? Are the very few spoiled at the expense of the majority's welfare? The problem of how, where, and on what terms to house the urban masses in an industrial society remains unresolved to this day. In nineteenth-century Victorian England, overcrowding was the most obvious characteristic of urban housing and, despite constant agitation, it remained widespread and persistent in London and other great cities such as Manchester, Glasgow, and Liverpool well into the twentieth century. The Eternal Slum is the first full-length examination of working-class housing issues in a British town. The city investigated not only provided the context for the development of a national policy but also, in scale and variety of response, stood in the vanguard of housing reform. The failure of traditional methods of social amelioration in mid-century, the mounting storm of public protest, the efforts of individual philanthropists, and then the gradual formulation and application of new remedies, constituted a major theme: the need for municipal enterprise and state intervention. Meanwhile, the concept of overcrowding, never precisely defined in law but based on middle-class notions of decency and privacy, slowly gave way to the positive idea of adequate living space, with comfort, as much as health or morals, the criterion. Not just dwellings but people were at issue. There is little evidence in this period of the attitude of the worker himself to his housing. Wohl has extensively researched local archives and, in particular, drawn on the vestry reports which have been relatively neglected. Profusely illustrated with contemporary photographs and drawings, this book is the definitive study of the housing reform movement in Victorian and Edwardian London and suggests what it was really like to live under such appalling conditions. This important study will be of interest to social historians, British historians, urban planners, and those interested in how social policies developed in previous eras.

Citizenship And The Legitimacy Of Governance written by Italo Pardo and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-23 with Social Science categories.

Against the background of unease at the increasingly loose and conflictual relationship between citizenship and governance, this book brings together rich, ethnographic studies from EU member states and post-Communist and Middle-Eastern countries in the Mediterranean Region to illustrate the crisis of legitimacy inherent in the weakening link between political responsibility and trust in the exercise of power. With close attention to the impact of the ambiguities and distortions of governance at the local level and their broader implications at the international level, where a state's legitimacy depends on its democratic credentials, Citizenship and the Legitimacy of Governance initiates a comparative discussion of the relationship between established moralities, politics, law and civil society in a highly diversified region with a strong history of cultural exchange. Demonstrating that a comparative anthropological analysis has much to offer to our understanding, this volume reveals that the city is a crucial arena for the renegotiation of citizenship, democracy and belonging.
