Excerpt from Some Recent Phases of German Theology The following three lectures were dcliv ered at the Bible Institute, at Lakeside, O in August, 1907, and have called forth many expressions of desire to obtain them in printed form. They appear substantially as they were delivered. The author does not pretend to discuss the whole field of German Theology, but merely desires to point out some salient tendencies of the present day. It is hoped that the appended notes may prove helpful in acquainting American readers with at least part of the most recent German theological literature. Excerpt from German Culture and Christianity: Their Controversy in the Time 1770-1880 Can the world go on without a revealed religion No. This is in substance the answer given, directly or indirectly, by such men as Lessing, Herder, Jacobi, Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel. Their no may possibly liave some weight, when placed in opposition to the yes rather boldly pronounced by certain representatives of our latest science - that which is usually called positivism. In passing there may be briefly noticed the fact - that just in proportion as men have been led to higher views of ethics, they have been led also to entertain more respectful views of revealed religion. This general fact is made clear throughout the whole course of the controversy. Let the sequences of its several phases be noticed; let facts be stated completely; and rationalism itself must say some thing in behalf of the faith that it would destroy. The concessions that have been made by unbelievers are remarkable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Old Testament Theology, Vol. 1 of 2: The Religion of Revelation in Its Pre-Christian Stage of Development The work of Dr. Hermann Schultz on Old Testament Theology has long been a standard authority on the important subject of which it treats. The author is one of the most accomplished exponents of that school of theological thought which is at present dominant in Germany. He stands high in the esteem of all parties; and it is thought by many that he has succeeded in discovering the via media between the positions of Biblical scholars like Delitzsch on the one hand and Stade on the other. Biblical theology is a subject certain to receive in the immediate future from the Christian public, both of Great Britain and America, a steadily increasing share of attention. One of the characteristics of the age is the emphasis with which the Christian Churches are declaring that it is their duty as well as their privilege to interpret Scripture in the full light of present-day research. Hence the growing anxiety to know what the books of the Bible actually teach. It is this question which Dr. Schultz has undertaken to answer, from the historical point of view, in so far as the Old Testament is concerned. Excerpt from The Reformation in Germany Within a generation a new way of looking at all history has become common among students of the past, a recognition of the fundamental importance of the economic basis of society, and the influence of economic changes on all human institutions and movements. The economic interpretation of history has not yet been applied to the period of the Reformation, and that fact is the chief justification of this attempt to retell a story that has been so often told, yet told inadequately. That the great religious struggle of the sixteenth century was only a phase of the social revolution then going on in Europe and effecting a transforma tion of all its institutions, that momentous economic changes were the underlying cause of political and religious movements, are ideas for which the reader will look in vain in books on the Reformation accessible to him. But these ideas are now accepted by most historical students, and in the light of them all the history of the past is undergoing a reinterpretation. The external events of the Reformation have been told before with substantial accuracy; what is now needed is illumination of the facts by the light of this new knowledge. By itself this would be a sufficient justification for the writing of a new book on this old subject. But there are other reasons. For more than a generation, Europe has been swept with lighted candle to find the smallest fragment of document, or one overlooked fact, that could shed light on the Reformation period. The result has been the accumulation of an enormous mass of material, much of it trivial and jejune - mountains of chaff, to speak plainly, with here and there a kernel of precious wheat. Little, relatively, has been done in the way of comparing, sifting, unifying this mass of useful and useless information. Monographs have multiplied, it is true, until every character of the age, however little noteworthy, has his biography; and every event, however obscure, has its separate doc umented story. Has not the time come for the telling of the larger story once more, in the light of this newly discovered body of fact? The Apocalypse In Germany written by Klaus Vondung and has been published by University of Missouri Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with Art categories.

Originally published in German in 1988, The Apocalypse in Germany is now available for the first time in English. A fitting subject for the dawn of the new millennium, the apocalypse has intrigued humanity for the last two thousand years, serving as both a fascinating vision of redemption and a profound threat. A cross-disciplinary study, The Apocalypse in Germany analyzes fundamental aspects of the apocalypse as a religious, political, and aesthetic phenomenon. Author Klaus Vondung draws from religious, philosophical, and political texts, as well as works of art and literature. Using classic Jewish and Christian apocalyptic texts as symbolic and historical paradigms, Vondung determines the structural characteristics and the typical images of the apocalyptic worldview. He clarifies the relationship between apocalyptic visions and utopian speculations and explores the question of whether modern apocalypses can be viewed as secularizations of the Judeo-Christian models. Examining sources from the eighteenth century to the present, Vondung considers the origins of German nationalism, World War I, National Socialism, and the apocalyptic tendencies in Marxism as well as German literature--from the fin de siècle to postmodernism. His analysis of the existential dimension of the apocalypse explores the circumstances under which particular individuals become apocalyptic visionaries and explains why the apocalyptic tradition is so prevalent in Germany. The Apocalypse in Germany offers an interdisciplinary perspective that will appeal to a broad audience. This book will also be of value to readers with an interest in German studies, as it clarifies the riddles of Germany's turbulent history and examines the profile of German culture, particularly in the past century.
