The problem considered is that of rarefied gas flow through a long two-dimenional channel, of length L and width d, connecting two large gas reservoirs at the same tempeature theta, but at slightly different pressures, namely, P1 and P2. The channel walls are also kept at the same temperature theta. Under continuum conditions, the flow rate is known to obey the classical Poiseuille formula. On the other hand, when the mean free path is not very small compared to the width, it is necessary to abandon the continuum approach in favor of the kinetic theory viewpoint. (Author).

Several algorithmic extensions to the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) that permits its application to rarefied gas flows are presented. The accuracy of the new method is first demonstrated by validating the desired power-law viscosity-temperature relationship over the range of power-law exponents typically found in single component fluids. Next, the plane Poiseuille flow scenario is simulated for a series of Knudsen numbers, Kn, ranging from the continuum to the transition regimes, using a single computational framework. The reduced flow rate with the new approach is found to agree well with previously reported results for Kn

Part of the Princeton Aeronautical Paperback series designed to bring to students and research engineers outstanding portions of the twelve-volume High Speed Aerodynamics and Jet Propulsion series. These books have been prepared by direct reproduction of the text from the original series and no attempt has been made to provide introductory material or to eliminate cross reference to other portions of the original volumes. Originally published in 1961. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

The aim of this book is to present the concepts, methods and applications of kinetic theory to rarefied gas dynamics. After introducing the basic tools, problems in plane geometry are treated using approximation techniques (perturbation and numerical methods). These same techniques are later used to deal with two- and three-dimensional problems. The models include not only monatomic but also polyatomic gases, mixtures, chemical reactions. A special chapter is devoted to evaporation and condensation phenomena. Each section is accompanied by problems which are mainly intended to demonstrate the use of the material in the text and to outline additional subjects, results and equations. This will help ensure that the book can be used for a range of graduate courses in aerospace engineering or applied mathematics.

Progress in Aeronautical Sciences, Volume 8 is a collection of papers that covers the widening field of aeronautical sciences. The first article deals with problems in fluid mechanics and practical aerodynamics. This paper includes reducing problems to integral equations; the comparison of calculated results with exact analytic solutions; and with experimental pressure distributions using various configurations. The book follows this discussion with a review of the methods for designing swept-winged aircraft, including the design of a symmetrical-fuselage combination at zero incidence. The text also reviews the propulsion characteristics of a hypothetical aircraft flying at hypersonic speeds, and then focuses on air-breathing engines to power hypersonic aircrafts of which the scramjet is the most promising. The publication renders a comprehensive report on the viscous flow in boundary layers in ducts under rarefied conditions. The book then reviews investigations made on the viscous flow through tubes, both in continuum flow and in free-molecule flow. Another paper develops the fundamental mathematical and physical bases of magnetohydrodynamic flow through ducts in the presence of an applied electromagnetic field. Such review is useful when applied to electromagnetic flowmeters, pumps, or generators. The volume can be helpful for aerodynamic researchers, aviation technologists and designers, and aeronautical engineers.
