Love stories are as old as time. What makes this one different is that it is true. It is an enchanting story that starts during the Second World War. An artillery officer about to go overseas on active service meets a pretty girl in a small village in the south of England. She is a talented draftswoman in the drawing office of a key wartime research establishment. They fall in love. His embarkation leave turns into a whirlwind courtship. Separated by war and duty, they never lose hope that one day they will be together. There is a first-hand account of the Allied landings in North Africa and the invasion of Sicily. A charming picture is painted of the day-to-day life of the young girl as she awaits his return, with fascinating glimpses of life in wartime Britain. Their dreams come true and they are married. In the post-war years their life together is rich in travel and adventure; the scene moves to Singapore, Hong Kong, America and France. It contains many amusing incidents and anecdotes that portray everyday life in the half- century that has just ended. Through it all runs the thread of their timeless romance. It is a lovely story that never loses its enchantment. It will have special appeal in an age of some cynicism about romance and marriage. Once started, it is hard to put this book down.

"When I was little, I imagined a monster: Scaly hands. Pits for eyes..." When Tracy and her best friend, Lisa, were kids, stories about a man-a creep who exposes himself to little girls-kept them out of the woods and in their own backyards. But Tracy and Lisa aren't so little anymore, and the man in the woods is nothing but a silly story. Right? But someone is in the woods. Someone is watching. And he knows all their secrets, secrets they can't tell anyone-not even each other. "Monsters don't exist." Lisa's just being paranoid. At least that's what Tracy thinks. But when a disturbing "gift" confirms her worst fears, it sets the girls on a dangerous journey that takes them beyond the edge of the woods. They swiftly learn however that reality is more terrifying than the most chilling myth, and what they find will test the bonds of friendship, loyalty, and love. "Once upon a time, two girls were lost in the woods." In Barbara's Stewart's What We Knew, Tracy and Lisa can't destroy the evil they'll face, but can they stop it from destroying each other?

This book is one woman's report from the front lines of digital dating. Grace Anderson, a novelist with grown children, an ex-husband, an age beginning with the number "4" and an acute case of writer's block, turns to cyberspace for diversion/inspiration. She finds it in the form of a bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished man she meets in a chat room late one evening. The two of them begin to build a relationship the old-fashioned way - with their words and their imaginations. When her cyberspace swain turns three-dimensional, the good news is that he is indeed bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished, and better yet, drop-dead handsome. The more, interesting news is that he is a Princeton University Wunderkind, twenty-eight years her junior--younger than both of Grace's sons. So, just what happens when the perfect love meets a most socially unacceptable age gap? The road to finding that out will captivate you. The storyline is timely... and the romance... timeless.

For the last quarter century, Dan Jenkins has been fixing his cold-eyed stare and wisecracking style on the real-life Billy Clyde and Kenny Lee Pucketts of the sports world. You Call It Sports, But I Say It’s a Jungle Out There is a collection of his best work from Sports Illustrated, Playboy, Golf Digest, and his nationally syndicated column, and includes a stack of new pieces written especially for this book. Jenkins spares no one in his search for the culprits who have taken the fun out of sports: NFL owners and refs, PGA Tour administrators, basketball players who can’t read, tennis players who can’t speak English (or say anything worth hearing when they do). He also finds things worth celebrating: the electric charge given off by Arnold Palmer at his best, the excitement of a truly great college football game, or a real heavyweight champion, like Joe Louis. Overflowing with good ol’ boys, great one-liners, famous sporting events, and barroom tales, this is the best of Dan Jenkins—which is to say, it’s as good as sportswriting gets anywhere.

"Robin Fox has had a fascinating, adventurous and funny life. It would make a great movie."--Peter Cattaneo, director of Academy Award nominee for Best Picture, The Full Monty. "Participant Observer is so well written, so high-table picaresque, so obsessively learned, so slant, so provocative and skitterish. Who is this remarkable third-person writer pirouetting all around me? An important work stylistically and an important account of a chapter in intellectual history."--E. O. Wilson, Sociobiology: The New Synthesis "Participant Observer describes a fascinating intellectual odysseyà. It is both a commentary on a career and, equally, an interpretation of the significant changes in the development of the social sciences during the period. He evokes forceful memories of English university life as it was poised to be transformed from an elite to a mass system of tertiary educationà. It is a celebration of the interconnectedness between thought and action." --Lord Smith of Clifton, former vice-chancellor, The University of Ulster. "A whirlwind ride through the formative years of modern anthropology. Robin Fox has never failed to entertain me."--Desmond Morris, The Naked Ape "Participant Observer, is a romp at blazing speed and with unfailing wit and verve through the great period of anthropology.... [It] is full of brilliant portraits of the great actors of that drama, and indeed of many of the leading figures of the last several decades in politics, show business, the arts and the sciences in general. It represents a worldview that we need now more than ever: one that loves the human race in all its self-ignorance, its tragic contradictions, and its foolish hopes."--Frederick Turner, Genesis: An Epic Poem "Robin Fox writes with great charm, directness and wit. His thinking is always independent and original. The unusual idea of combining a history of anthropology with the anthropologist's personal memoirs opens unexpected emotional and intellectual depths."--Mary Douglas, Purity and Danger "A memoir that deftly blends the nascence of the tectonic shift in the way humans perceive themselves with the way one human sees his own fascinating life. The result is a witty, artfully written autobiography, that is both important in the history of ideas and a joy to read."--William Wright, Lillian Hellman: The Image, The Woman "Robin Fox has written a spirited, poetic, amusing and erudite account of his journey through life and science. As his thoughtful and adventurous narrative unfolds, you come to understand the major twentieth-century ideas and events that have revolutionized the social sciences and are setting the intellectual trends today. It's a grand read: learned and an awful lot of fun."--Helen Fisher, Why We Love "Robin Fox's account of his long, rich life is gracefully crafted, consistently interesting, frequently funny, and all in all a pleasure to read. Since it has been a life of the mind, it is also a lively history of the ideas and events of the mid-to-late twentieth century."--Melvin Konner, The Tangled Wing "Robin Fox, once young rebel, now eminent explainer of social origins, smiter of chicanery and academic pap, is also a literary man, linguist, poet, singer, artist and adventurer. Friend and precept find him loyal. Fools he suffers suffer from him. He wears emblematic names, and you recognize him. Hideous shapes dance with beauty. Fear pursues glory. Buy it, steal it, keep it safe between the cinnamon and the ginger."--Richard de Mille, My Secret Mother: Lorna Moon In the tradition of Levi-Strauss's Tristes Tropiques (crossed with Angela's Ashes) Robin Fox, one of the preeminent anthropologists of our time, takes us on an exuberant personal, intellectual and cultural journey through the 1930s to the 1970s. This is a personal, historical, intellectual journey, one that is
