Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1913, Vol. 2 The italics in the address as printed are the author's; also the spell ings. The many capitalizations of words, which simply followed the cus tom of that day, are not all reproduced as written. It will be seen that from a literary point of View the address does not do the author the justice of many of his published letters and official writings, but it is to be presumed it was prepared in haste, and of course was not revised for publication. The address, however, shows Paterson's point of view as to the conduct of the Tories, and that the early leniency of the Executive toward them was, in his Opinion, a lamentable mistake. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1918, Vol. 7 Resolved, that Thaddeus Kosciuszko, Esquire, be appointed an Engineer in the service of the United States, with the pay of sixty dollars a month and the rank of Colonel. Thus it was, that, at two dollars per day, this Polish nobleman's son became an American Engineer and Colonel. It is said, and I believe is not disputed, that, while awaiting the action of Congress, he made a plan for fortifications at Billingsport, New Jersey, on the Delaware, twelve miles south of Camden. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1912, Vol. 1 The older generation is passing away; its members Of half a century past could have thrown a flood of light upon Revolutionary and post Revolutionary times in Somerset had such a magazine as this quarterly been hitherto established. Soon there will only exist a generation whose knowledge of ancient affairs must be at second, third or fourth-hand. Even the Older tombstones in our many ancient farm and churchyard cemeteries are crumbling, and, unless soon transcribed, cannot be read. Some of the older church records are also not in a good state of preser vation, and should be copied and published while it is possible to do it. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1917, Vol. 6 Early English historians could hardly have been expected to do jus tice to Scotch emigrants to this country, or even to the horrors of life in Scotland previous to their migration. After the lapse of more than a century, however, there began to creep into the histories of Britain, written by Englishmen, some faint glimmers of the truth. Among the first of his countrymen, Macauley admitted the 'facts, and he well summed up the particular period to which I shall later refer, when, in one of his celebrated essays in 1835, he wrote: The contest between the Scotch nation and the Anglican Church had produced near thirty years of the most frightful misgovernment ever Seen in any part of Great Britain. It was this misgovernment, carried on by Kings, bishops and armies, which turned Scotland into a place of torment for a far longer period than thirty years; and it was only the hardihood, obstinacy, valor and intensely independent and irrepressible spirit of the Scottish race which enabled the people, even in part, to survive the catastrophe. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1914, Vol. 3 Portsmouth, Monday morning, 19th May, 1800 - The court is to open to-day; but as the clerk has not come in, I cannot say how much business we shall have to go through. In this district the business in the legal line generally has not been much; but it is said to be more at present than at any former period. It is probable, however, that the court will not continue longer than this week; and therefore I hope on Monday next to shape my course homewards. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, Vol. 8: 1919 As to the younger Hendrick it is certain he had no advanced educa tion, but must have been entirely self-made. Excerpt from Somerset County Historical Quarterly, 1915, Vol. 4 Visiting, last Winter, my friend Mr. George, at Raritan, in New Jersey, I wrote an Ode to the River. I now take the liberty to transmit it to you considerably enlarged, and, I flatter myself, somewhat revised and corrected. New York, January 4, The Ode may be dismissed by saying that it is an excellent poem of forty - eight rhymed tetrameter lines, with a movement as flowing and continuous as the river it celebrates. At the writer's suggestion, Mr. William C. Armstrong included it among the selections Of his Patriotic Poems of New Jersey, published in 1903, where it may be read at leisure by the interested. Curiosity as to the career of a person who could write such good verse was awakened and was increased by finding in the same volume of the European Magazine another letter by Davis, in which the yellow fever plague at New York in 1805 was described. In this letter, also, was a reference to Mr. George, of New Jersey, whose identity became likewise a matter of interest. Of John Davis much was gradually discovered. He was a self-made English school teacher, writer and traveller, who succeeded in even getting the notice of President Jefferson. He wrote poetry, history and novels, and a book of his travels. This last was published under the title, Travels of Four Years and a Half in the United States of Amer ica; during 1798, 1799, 1800, 1801, and 1802. It was published in London in 1803. Very recently this work has been republished by Henry Holt 8: Company, with an introduction and notes by A. J. Morison. Upon examining this available work there was found frequent mention by Davis of a Lucas George, as having been successively the teacher of schools at Charleston and Georgetown, South Carolina, and Newtowtn, Long Island. No reference to Raritan is found in the Travels, because George began to teach there in 1802, later than the period covered by that book. But it was easy to make the connection, and it was a gratifying discovery to learn that the Mr George of the letters in the magazine was the Lucas George of the Travels.
