Filosofía y ciencia, humanismo y conocimiento de la naturaleza se aúnan en este manifiesto ideológico dentro de una línea de pensamiento fuerte que busca la verdad sin contemplaciones, sin juegos de palabras, sacando sus garras ante las múltiples voces que desafían sus principios. Trata con rigor, sin llegar a ser un manual para especialistas, temas como el determinismo, el reduccionismo, la flecha del tiempo, el problema mente-cerebro, el azar, la teoría cuántica de la medida, la evolución de las especies, etc. El interés está sobre todo en desmentir algunas proclamaciones esotéricas, cuando no místicas, que se han hecho en nombre de la ciencia o la filosofía. Para ello se propone ir a la raíz, o al menos una de las raíces, de la divergencia entre el pensamiento humanista y el pensamiento científico: el debate que enfrenta el materialismo científico con otras concepciones ontológicas. La idea principal del ensayo es defender que la ciencia del siglo XX no ha abierto nuevas puertas al libre albedrío o al dualismo-mentalismo, en contra de lo que proclaman algunos otros autores contemporáneos. ¿Por qué el tema de la libertad humana? Porque éste es precisamente un punto clave donde divergen las distintas filosofías, es justo el punto que sitúa al ser humano en el Cosmos. Somos fragmentos de Naturaleza arrastrados por sus leyes, en tal fatalismo se desenvuelve esta obra que concluye con un canto al “amor fati”. Además, se incluye un gracioso apéndice, “¿Cómo se hizo...?”, narrando las desventuras que tuvo que pasar este trabajo para abrirse camino entre los oscuros claustros de las facultades de filosofía.

Nobody should have a monopoly of the truth in this universe. The censorship and suppression of challenging ideas against the tide of mainstream research, the blacklisting of scientists, for instance, is neither the best way to do and filter science, nor to promote progress in the human knowledge. The removal of good and novel ideas from the scientific stage is very detrimental to the pursuit of the truth. There are instances in which a mere unqualified belief can occasionally be converted into a generally accepted scientific theory through the screening action of refereed literature and meetings planned by the scientific organizing committees and through the distribution of funds controlled by "club opinions". It leads to unitary paradigms and unitary thinking not necessarily associated to the unique truth. This is the topic of this book: to critically analyze the problems of the official (and sometimes illicit) mechanisms under which current science (physics and astronomy in particular) is being administered and filtered today, along with the onerous consequences these mechanisms have on all of us. Apart from the editors, Juan Miguel Campanario, Brian Martin, Wolfgang Kundt, J. Marvin Herndon, Marian Apostol, Halton C. Arp, Tom Van Flandern, Andrei P. Kirilyuk, Dmitri Rabounski and Henry H.
