All that he wrote and left behind him in printed form was not gathered into the pages of that work but nothing was left out which the editor and publisher could per suade themselves might be desired by the public, or the omission of which was likely to injure the reputa tion of the author. The long and unequal narrative poem of Peter Cornclips was omitted. Some of the Poet's satires were not included - such as are absent from this larger edition also - because, referring as they do to persons and events of more than fifty years ago, their point is either no longer apparent, or their motive has ceased to be interesting. But the worthy, the witty, and the wise - they were all there, to the honour and renown of their creator.
