This catalog supplements two monographic exhibitions with Brazilian artist Sonia Gomes hosted by Museu de Arte Contemporânea (MAC), in Niterói, and Museu de Arte de São Paulo Assis Chateaubriand (MASP), in São Paulo. The title of the book, Sonia Gomes: a vida renasce/ainda me levanto [Sonia Gomes: Life is Reborn/Still I Rise] is a combination of the two separate exhibition's titles: A vida renasce, sempre [Life is Reborn, Always], in Niteroi and, Ainda assim me levanto [Still I Rise], in São Paulo. The exhibitions showcase Gomes' extraordinary contribution to the language of contemporary sculpture and can be viewed as complementary. The show at MAC Niteroi brings together artworks spanning almost twenty years of her career; whilst in São Paulo, a new set of works was specially commissioned for MASP and Casa de Vidro. The MAC Niterói exhibition - curated by Pablo León de la Barra and Raphael Fonseca - presents 38 artworks from different periods that reveal Gomes' dedication to developing consistent series, such as Pendentes [Pendants] and Torções [Torsions]. In São Paulo, the exhibition - curated by Amanda Carneiro - represents the first partnership between MASP and Casa de Vidro/Instituto Bardi, showcasing new developments in Gomes' sculptural practice, which now incorporates branches and tree trunks, referencing her main new series: Raiz [Root]. This publication reproduces all the artworks presented in both exhibitions, as well as introducing brand new essays by Amanda Carneiro, Cecilia Fajardo-Hill, Júlia Rebouças, Raphael Fonseca and Rodrigo Moura.

This first monograph on the extraordinary Afro-Brazilian sculptor Sonia Gomes (born 1948) brings together around 100 images of her works. The book traces the path of this artist who, by transforming found and donated materials such as fabric and wire by twisting, tying and sewing, creates sculptures that describe her history as an artist of African descent. Born in Caetanópolis, a town with an important textile industry, Gomes grew up in the midst of textile factories and the strong presence of her grandmother--a black woman, a healer and a midwife, who taught her everything about the basics of sewing. The book includes essays by curators Ricardo Sardenberg and Solange Farkas, as well as a textual work by artist Paulo Nazareth made especially for this volume.

"I Rise - I'm a Black Ocean, Leaping and Wide in Museum Frieder Burda, Baden-Baden and the Salon Berlin, is the first institutional exhibition in Europe of the work of Brazilian artist Sonia Gomes. Sonia Gomes' biomorphic sculptures have an eerie, almost magical presence. Born in 1948 as the extramarital daughter of a white industrialist and a black woman, she grew up between two worlds. Gomes uses all kinds of found or gifted materials for her work, such as textiles, driftwood, furniture or wool, transforming them into sculptures or room-sized installations. Her works become vehicles for her own individualism, blending technical virtuosity and a materiality rooted in African folk art and spiritual traditions, a surreal language of form, Brazilian modernism and various currents of contemporary art."--Website

Revolution In The Making written by Emily Rothrum and has been published by Skira Editore this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Sculpture, Abstract categories.

Half theWorld traces the ways in which women artists deftly transformed the language of sculpture to invent radically new forms and processes that privileged studio practice, tactility and the artist's hand. The volume seeks to identify the multiple strains of proto-feminist practices, characterized by abstraction and repetition, which rejected the singularity of the masterwork and rearranged sculptural form to be contingent upon the way the body moved around it in space. The catalogue begins in the immediate post-war era, with the first section spanning the late 1950s through the 1950s. Featuring historically important predecessors including Ruth Asawa, Lee Bontecou, Louise Bourgeois, Claire Falkenstein and Louise Nevelson, this section examines abstraction based on the human figure and the influence of the unconscious. The second section covers the decades of the 1960s and 1970s, and includes Magdalena Abakanowicz, Lynda Benglis, Heidi Bucher, Gego, François Grossen, Eva Hesse, Sheila Hicks, Marisa Merz, Mira Schendel, Michelle Stuart, Hannah Wilke, and Jackie Winsor, a generation of post-minimalist artists who ignited a revolution in their use of process-oriented materials and methods. In the 1980s and 1990s, the period explored in the third section, artists Phyllida Barlow, Isa Genzken, Cristina Iglesias, Liz Larner, Anna Maria Maiolino, Senga Nengudi, and Ursula von Rydingsvard moved beyond singular, three-dimensional objects toward architectonic works characterized by repetition, structure, and design. The final section is comprised of post-2000 works by artists Karla Black, Abigail DeVille, Sonia Gomes, Rachel Khedoori, Lara Schnitger, Shinique Smith, and Jessica Stockholder, artists who create installation-based environments, embracing domestic materials and craft as an embedded discourse.

"This book discusses how some works of art produced in Latin America in the sixties, seventies, and eighties forged a different understanding of the female body, understood as space for the expression of a dissident subjectivity in relation to socially normalized places. Representations of art and of feminist activism interrogated the disciplining of the female body that entails as well the disciplining of the male body. Before a history of highly regulated artistic representations-regardless of the occasional exceptions a historian might point out-images erupted that questioned the social and institutional naturalization of the feminine and the masculine"--

A holistic method for resolving individual and intergenerational trauma • Explains how the author came to develop her system by integrating ancestral tribal wisdom with a fusion of two Western healing systems: Somatic Experiencing and Systemic Family Constellations Therapy • Shares stories from her healing work around the world, showing how this system can help resolve PTSD, depression, sexual trauma, addiction, and chronic illness • Presents action steps that readers can take immediately to engage the personal healing process The journey to healing trauma is not always straightforward. As Euphrasia “Efu” Nyaki reveals in detail, the healing process is a complex ritual of energy movement on the physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Born and raised on Mount Kilimanjaro’s slopes in Tanzania, East Africa, Efu explains how she came to develop her profoundly successful system for helping people heal trauma by integrating ancestral tribal wisdom with a fusion of two Western healing systems: Somatic Experiencing and Systemic Family Constellations Therapy. She shares how her journey to become a healer was initiated by her Grandfather, who told her the legend of the sacred healing snail of the Nyaki clan. She explains how she discovered Somatic Experiencing and Systemic Family Constellations Therapy, and how combining these therapies created a powerful system for releasing cellular memories and healing the intergenerational and collective traumas hidden beneath the surface of suffering. Sharing stories from her healing work around the world, she presents action steps, such as meditations, breathwork, or creating a family tree, that readers can take immediately to regulate their nervous systems, deepen their awareness, and engage the personal healing process. Demonstrating how trauma survivors can transform their suffering into vibrant wholeness, the author shows how healing trauma is the result of bringing the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of our lives into an integrated coherence.

How is your institution enabling Black, Asian and minority ethnic staff and students to thrive? Is your institution effectively tackling racism? Following the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, the higher education sector has started making bold commitments to dismantling structural racism. However, big questions remain about how higher education can combat institutional racism and achieve real change. This book disrupts the higher education sector through ambitious actions and collective, participatory and evidence-informed responses to racism. It offers a roadmap for senior leaders, staff and students to build strategies, programmes and interventions that effectively tackle racism. Arising from current staff and recent student experiences, this book supports institutions driving equality, diversity, inclusion and intersectional programmes in higher education.
