Harvey, (1988-1957) was born in Gloucestershire and went to war as a Private with the Fifth Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. He was eventually taken POW in 1916. These poems were written in a succession of POW camps in Germany. In his introduction, Rt Rev Bishop Frodsham (canon of Gloucester) says, "The poet simply and unaffectedly lays bare his heart, his love, his faith, his hope, his sense of loneliness, of ineffectiveness, of baffled purposes and incompleted manhood."
