New York Times Bestseller The definitive story of the Ritchie Boys, as featured on CBS's 60 Minutes "An irresistible history of the WWII Jewish refugees who returned to Europe to fight the Nazis.” —Newsday They were young Jewish boys who escaped from Nazi-occupied Europe and resettled in America. After the United States entered the war, they returned to fight for their adopted homeland and for the families they had left behind. Their stories tell the tale of one of the U.S. Army’s greatest secret weapons. Sons and Soldiers begins during the menacing rise of Hitler’s Nazi party, as Jewish families were trying desperately to get out of Europe. Bestselling author Bruce Henderson captures the heartbreaking stories of parents choosing to send their young sons away to uncertain futures in America, perhaps never to see them again. As these boys became young men, they were determined to join the fight in Europe. Henderson describes how they were recruited into the U.S. Army and how their unique mastery of the German language and psychology was put to use to interrogate German prisoners of war. These young men—known as the Ritchie Boys, after the Maryland camp where they trained—knew what the Nazis would do to them if they were captured. Yet they leapt at the opportunity to be sent in small, elite teams to join every major combat unit in Europe, where they collected key tactical intelligence on enemy strength, troop and armored movements, and defensive positions that saved American lives and helped win the war. A postwar army report found that nearly 60 percent of the credible intelligence gathered in Europe came from the Ritchie Boys. Sons and Soldiers draws on original interviews and extensive archival research to vividly re-create the stories of six of these men, tracing their journeys from childhood through their escapes from Europe, their feats and sacrifices during the war, and finally their desperate attempts to find their missing loved ones. Sons and Soldiers is an epic story of heroism, courage, and patriotism that will not soon be forgotten.

The story of young German Jews who escaped the Nazis, most often without their families, only to return a few years later to war-torn Europe as members of an elite secret U.S. Army unit. The young men who would become known as "The Ritchie Boys" arrived in America as "enemy aliens," and although they were allowed to enlist in the U.S. military, they were distrusted by everyone. So, in effect, they became outsiders all over again. Until one day in 1942, when the Pentagon woke up to the incredible asset they had on their hands. These men knew the language, culture and psychology of the enemy better than any Americans and had the greatest motivation to fight Hitler's anti-Semitic regime. The Pentagon came up with a top-secret plan to harness their expertise by training them in the art of prisoner interrogation. And so off they were sent, back into the belly of the beast, Jews returning to Nazi Germany to occupy the very front lines of battlefields across Europe. Many of them re-entered Europe on D-Day. Their mission, to extract vital intel from freshly-captured POWs about troop movements and command structures and so on, was hugely successful and provided key information that led to victory by the Allied forces. Meanwhile, few of these men knew what had happened to the families they left behind in Germany, families who had sacrificed to send them on to the safety of America. As the intelligence they gathered revealed increasingly horrific details about the Holocaust (most of which was only then beginning to come to light), they came to fear - and, in many cases, discovered - that the worst had befallen their own fathers and mothers and siblings.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Book Preview: #1 Günther Stern, the eldest child of Julius and Hedwig Stern, had a idyllic childhood in Hildesheim, Germany. He was four years older than his brother, Werner, and twelve years older than his sister, Eleonore. The family was middle class. #2 In 1933, Hitler became chancellor of Germany, and within two months, the government called for a nationwide boycott of Jewishowned businesses. Many Jewish proprietors began losing their nonJewish customers. #3 Günther was a victim of Nazi Germany, and he was completely cut off from his former friends. He was forced to cut out pages from his history book and replace them with new pages, because the teacher thought the old pages were filled with Jewish information. #4 As the violence and hatred mounted around them, the Stern family decided it was time to get out of Germany. They began writing to Jewish organizations, seeking information about emigrating to America. The Nazis had reduced the amount of money that Germans could transfer out of the country, which was a major impediment for Jews wanting to immigrate to America.

He was determined that his dark secrets never be uncovered but after his suspicious death in 1963, a process began that led to the deep exposure of one of the great society scandals of the modern age, which rocked the House of Lords. Fully illustrated throughout with extensive archival research, first-person interviews with leading socialites, DNA tests and damning confessions!"Men's evil manners live in brass; their virtues we write in water." - Shakespeare's Henry VII, 1633

Excerpt from A Soldier's Son The war was over - the cruel, cruel war; and Father and Uncle Howard were on their way home. Children's voices, in every key Of joy and thanksgiving, sang the happy news from morning to night. The white, strained look faded from Mother's face, and she became her Old, bright self again. Now that they were over, the Children tried to forget how long and sad and weary the days had been during which the Sight Of the post bag, and the morning newspaper, almost took everyone's breath away, until the columns of War news had been hastily scanned before taking letters and papers to Mother's room. Then came the day when Uncle Howard's name was amongst the seriously wounded, and there was a brief account Of how he had saved the guns, and then returning into the firing line to pick up a wounded soldier, had himself been dangerously wounded. The children thought of Uncle Howard's delicate young motherless boy, and sobbed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
