Der König Ödipus des Sophokles gehört zu den berühmtesten Tragödien der Antike. In der europäischen und auch außereuropäischen Literatur lässt sich eine vielfältige Wirkungsgeschichte nachweisen. Für Aristoteles galt das Drama geradezu als Mustertragödie, und bis in die Gegenwart ist es für die Tragödientheorie von Bedeutung. Gleichzeitig wird bis heute sowohl über das Verständnis des Dramas als auch über die Textgestaltung höchst kontrovers diskutiert. Der König Ödipus wird hier mit kritisch überprüftem griechischen Text, neuer deutscher Übersetzung, ausführlicher Einleitung und fortlaufender Kommentierung vorgelegt. In der Einleitung werden u. a. die Geschichte des Stoffes bis zur Fassung des Sophokles, strittige Probleme der Interpretation und die Rezeption des Dramas behandelt. Die Kommentierung bezieht sich auf den übersetzten Text und ist so konzipiert, dass sie von Lesern ohne Griechischkenntnisse uneingeschränkt benutzt werden kann. Zusätzlich werden für Leser, die den griechischen Text mit heranziehen oder von ihm ausgehen wollen, knapp gefasste textkritische und sprachliche Erläuterungen sowie metrische Analysen der Chorpartien geboten.
