Il dolore lacerante per la separazione matrimoniale, faticosamente accettata, genera in Carmen una forte depressione con conseguente perdita della voglia di vivere. Durante tutto il ciclo di una psicoterapia, si verificheranno una serie di fatti che porteranno la donna dapprima verso uno stadio di esaltazione dell’umore, poi verso una grave ricaduta. Lei che aveva rigettato sin dall’inizio un tipo di approccio terapeutico, non potrà più fare a meno di farvi ricorso, anche se come ultima spiaggia. Con il sostegno specialistico, ripercorrerà i momenti di una tragica sera, le tappe di un dolore acuto per i giorni perduti. I passi graduali verso la consapevolezza delle origini di un malessere, riusciranno a chiudere positivamente un cammino di guarigione. Durante la psicoterapia, Carmen ripercorrerà la sua infanzia, l’adolescenza e le altre fasi della vita fino alla sera in cui tenterà il suicidio. Contemporaneamente al lungo ciclo di sedute, chiuderà la sua relazione con una sua amica molto intrigante, vivrà una storia con il problematico giovane praticante, incontrerà un personaggio misterioso. Infine, Carmen instaurerà la giusta relazione medico paziente che, attraverso l’evocazione di un ricordo, la condurrà verso la guarigione definitiva. Lo strumento di cui si avvale il medico per guarire Carmen è quello della ipnosi terapeutica.
