Cet ouvrage etudie le processus de modernisation lexicale de l'indonesien, plus particulierement la modernisation des lexiques specialises, entreprise pour repondre aux besoins de l'intertraductibilite avec les autres langues. Ce sont les activites menees sous l'impulsion de l'Etat ou par ses agents qui interessent l'auteur au premier chef. La modernisation de l'indonesien (appele malais jusqu'au debut du XXe siecle) est d'abord envisagee sous l'angle historique, depuis les origines (les premieres sources datent du VIIe siecle) jusqu'a l'epoque de Indes Neerlandaises (1818-1942). Puis il aborde les activites terminologiques institutionnelles de la periode post-coloniale, consideree jusqu'en 1995. On ne peut parler de politique ni de planification terminologique de l'indonesien avant 1975, mais les vingt annees qui suivent voient un developpement remarquable de la reflexion terminologique et de l'action de l'Etat dans ce domaine. Les axes principaux de cette politique sont l'equipement planifie des lexiques specilaises, particulierement dans le domaine scientifique, juge necessaire a la modernisation du pays; et la cooperation terminologique entre les pays de la malayophonie (Indonesie, Malaisie, Brunei Darussalam), aux fins d'harmonisation. L'auteur dresse ensuite un bilan critique des activites terminologiques menees entre 1975 et 1995. Il etudie pour cela l'harmonisation terminologique des pays malayophones dans le domaine de l'electromagnetisme, puis l'implantation des terminologies institutionnelles dans l'enseignement secondaire, a partir de la terminologie de base de la thermodynamique.
