"Türkiye'de güncel sorunlarla boğuşurken, temel meseleleri ve ana doğrultuyu gözden uzak tutmamak lazım. Çünkü bugünkü sıkıntılar bu ana meselelerin türevleridir. Biz, dünyanın din, etnisite ve kültür bakımından en renkli (dolayısıyla en çatışmalı), zengin sosyal coğrafyasında kurduğumuz büyük bir imparatorluktan ulus devlet yaratma sürecine, ayrıca geri kalmışlığın oluşturduğu sosyal stres ve telaşla hızla sanayileşmek, kalkınmak, demokratikleşmek yani modernleşmek sürecine girmiş bir toplumuz. Bu sosyolojik süreçler çok problemli, zor, sancılı ve uzun soluklu süreçlerdir. Cumhuriyetin başlangıç yıllarında bu süreçlerin bu kadar belalı olduğunu ve uzun süreceğini fark ettiğimizi zannetmiyorum. Ayrıca Cumhuriyeti kuran kadrolar yeni siyasal düzeni sağlamak, yerleştirmek adına, tarihsel bakımdan sosyal zemindeki, dinsel, etnik, ekonomik ve kültürel farklılıkları görmezden gelerek sadece siyasal ve yasal reformlarla bu işin başarılabileceğini düşünmüşlerdir. Halbuki ulaşılmak istenen hedef ve dava çok büyüktür; ama burada kullanılan araçlar, yöntemler çok yetersiz kalmıştır. Bugün iç ve dış dinamiklere, gelişmelere bağlı olarak toplum (bu noktada İletişim Devrimi'nin etkilerini de hesaba katmak gerekir) demokratikleştikçe, özgürlükler ve bireyleşme arttıkça tüm eski hesaplar, defterler açılmakta, halledildiğini zannettiğimiz tarihsel, etnik, dinsel meseleler su yüzüne çıkmaktadır. Bu bölgenin özelliğinden dolayı dış sorunlar da cabası. İşte bu nedenlerle toplumları anlama, kavrama, analiz etme ve açıklama çabası olarak tarif edilebilecek olan sosyolojiye, yani sosyolojik veri ve bulgulara, yorumlara çok ihtiyacımız vardır. Sosyolojik meseleler salt hukuki, siyasal tedbirlerle, yasalarla, direktiflerle çözülemez. Ulus inşası yani sosyal ve ulusal bütünleşme öncelikle siyasal bir olgu değil, özü itibariyle ve öncelikle psikososyal ve kültürel bir olgudur. Toplumlar acı çekerek öğrenirler. Biz de büyük acılar da çeksek, uzun zaman da geçse sosyal bütünleşmeyi, demokratikleşmeyi gerçekleştireceğiz. Ancak toplumun önüne, onu tanımadan ve onun gerçekliğine aykırı düşen dayatmalar, öneriler koymak problemleri çözmek bir yana, meseleleri tümden ağırlaştırır ve işin içinden çıkılmaz hâle getirir".
